The riding camels watched the lightning when it flashed,

    Concealing anguish and revealing longing.

And sorrow grieved them, so my companion said,

"There is madness in these riding camels."

Its flash and radiant light mirrored

    Sulayma's smile and brow.

And the she-camels wept with streaming tears,

Leaving no secret of the heart concealed.

We shed tears for them—but what good does it do the she-camels,

Already hurt by love, if we weep?

How many a flash has stirred our hearts,

Then bloodied our eyes, after our hearts!

    فأعادَت ظنَّ الوشاة يقينا

    The talebearers' knowledge of passion was conjecture;

So the talebearers' conjecture was turned to certainty

By teardrops I let fall, and tears

That, but for love, would have been jealously withheld.

On the day of farewell, when Mayy's family

Broke camp with riding camels and howdahs.

The caravan went left, toward forgetting,

And we went right, with passion.
