لقدindeed عَجِبَwere amazed الحِسانُthe beautiful women الغيدُthe graceful ones لمَّاwhen

The graceful beauties were indeed amazed when
The bright-faced beauty was amazed when
They saw my detachment from them and my patient restraint,
She saw my endurance and composure towards her.

And that I am not drawn to a drinking companion
And that I do not incline towards a companion
Who slakes my thirst with cups of wine.
Who gives me cups of wine.
وإنِّيand indeed I قدindeed مَدَدْتُstretched out اليومtoday باعاًan armspan
أنالI attain بهاwith it الَّذيthat which فوقabove الدراريthe brilliant stars
And indeed, today I have stretched out my arms,
Today I have extended a hand
Reaching thereby what lies above the brilliant stars.
With which I can attain what is above clamor.
فلاso no يومday صَبَوْتُI yearned إلىfor الغوانيthe beautiful women
ولاnor يومa day خَلَعْتُI cast off بعunclear as written عذاريmy bridle
So on no day did I yearn for fair women,
Never a day have I inclined toward wantonness,
Nor on any day did I cast off [unclear word] my bridle.
Nor a day have I shed a shred of my honor.

وقدand indeed لاحappeared المشيبgray hair علىupon عذاريmy cheek-hair
May your mother mourn you! I have no excuse for revelry,
May you be bereft, I have no excuse for frivolity
And gray hair has appeared along my cheeks.
When grey hair has appeared on my temples.

And after this I will not ride
After this I will not mount,
A steed not safe from stumbling.
Except a steed that is sure of foot.
فنمso sleep ياO عاذليmy reproacher بالأمنin security منِّيfrom me
فلمfor ... did not تَرyou see بعدafter عذْلكyour reproach واعتذاريand my apology
So sleep, O my reproacher, at ease about me,
So sleep, my critic, in security from me,
For you have seen no such thing since your reproach and my apology.
For you have not seen, after your blame, my excuse.
وقلand say للغيدto the graceful beauties شأنكyour concern والتجافيand aloofness
وللغزلانand to the gazelles أخْذَكِyour adherence بالنفارto flight
And tell the graceful beauties, “Keep to your aloofness,”
And say to the beauty, "You go your way and be aloof,"
And to the gazelles, “Keep to your flight.”
And to the gazelles, "You take flight and flee."
صَبَوتُI yearned إلىfor الدمىthe doll-like beauties زمناًfor a time طويلاًlong
وقدand indeed أعْرَضْتُI turned away عنهاfrom them باختياريby my own choice
I yearned for the doll-like beauties for a long time,
I inclined long toward beauties,
And I have turned away from them of my own choice.
But now I have turned away by my own will.
وكانتand was صبوتيmy infatuation قدalready خامرتنيpossessed me

And my infatuation had possessed me,
And my inclination had tempted me,
And here I am, recovered from the hangover.
But look, now I am sober from intoxication.

وكانتand it was لاnot تصيخheeding إلىto قرارrest
And it roared for a time, then grew still,
I have wasted much time, but now I am settled,
And it had paid no heed to repose.
When before, I would not settle down.
لئنeven if ضيّعتُI squandered أيامthe days التصابيyouthful dalliance
فإنِّيthen indeed I قدindeed حَظيتُI attained علىupon الوقارdignity
Even if I have squandered the days of youthful dalliance,
If I have wasted the days of my youth,
Still, I have indeed gained dignity.
I have attained dignity.
وكيفand how يجدُّdoes he strive فيin طلبpursuit of الغوانيthe beautiful women
فتىًa youth قدalready جدّhas striven فيin طلبpursuit of الفخارglory
And how can he strive in pursuit of fair women—
And how can one occupied with seeking beauties,
A youth who has striven in pursuit of glory?
Find time for one occupied with seeking glory?
