الدِّينthe faith أصْبَحhas become منصوراًvictorious بتأييدthrough support
الدِّين أصْبَح منصوراً بتأييد
الحمدpraise للهto God فيin أيَّامthe days of محمودِMahmud
الحمد لله في أيَّام محمودِ
The faith has become victorious through support;
Religion is now victorious with support
Praise be to God in the days of Mahmud.
Praise be to Allah in the days of Mahmud
إذwhen سلَّhe unsheathed منfrom مرهفاتthe keen swords of اللهGod بيضgleaming ظباblade-edges
إذ سلَّ من مرهفات الله بيض ظبا
فشيَّدand so he built up الدِّينthe faith فيهاwith them أيwhat a تشييدbuilding up
فشيَّد الدِّين فيها أي تشييد
When he drew gleaming edges from God's keen swords,
When the refined ones of Allah were set free like white antelopes
And with them built up the faith—how mightily!
So he strengthened religion in it, what a strengthening
واستملكand he gained possession of الملكthe kingdom عنthrough رأيjudgment يسدّدهguides him aright
واستملك الملك عن رأي يسدّده
بحدٍّwith the edge of سيفٍa sword وفضلand bounty غيرnot محدودlimited
بحدٍّ سيفٍ وفضل غير محدود
And gained the kingdom through judgment that guides him aright,
And took possession of the kingdom by an opinion he makes firm
With a sword's edge and bounty without limit.
With a sharp sword and endless grace
سدّsecuring الثغورthe frontiers وتمهيدand ordering الأُمورaffairs بهthrough him
سدّ الثغور وتمهيد الأُمور به
فالملكso the kingdom ماwhat lies بينbetween تسديدsound direction وتمهيدand firm establishment
فالملك ما بين تسديد وتمهيد
Through him the frontiers are secured and affairs put in order;
He blocked the mountain passes and paved the way
So the kingdom lies between sound direction and firm establishment.
So the kingdom is between paving and blocking
أيَّامthe days of دولتهhis reign الفراءunclear; likely 'resplendent' تحسبهاyou would deem them
أيَّام دولته الفراء تحسبها
خالاًa beauty mark علىupon وجناتthe cheeks of الخردthe bashful maidens الغيدthe graceful, supple ones
خالاً على وجنات الخرد الغيد
The days of his [resplendent] reign, you would deem
The days of his shining rule you’d reckon
A beauty mark upon the cheeks of bashful, graceful maidens.
An epoch over the cheeks of time
الدهرTime يرهبfears منbefore ماضيthe sharp force of عزائمهhis resolves
الدهر يرهب من ماضي عزائمه
والبحرand the sea يطلبseeks منهfrom him ساحةthe expanse of الجودbounty
والبحر يطلب منه ساحة الجود
Time fears the sharp force of his resolves,
Time fears his resolute past
And the sea seeks from him the vast expanse of bounty.
And the sea seeks from him the field of generosity
روتnarrated معاليهhis noble deeds عنon the authority of سعدSa'd وماand not عدلتstrayed
روت معاليه عن سعد وما عدلت
بالعدلin justice إذat ذاكthat time عنfrom حكمthe judgment of ابنson of مسعودMas'ud
بالعدل إذ ذاك عن حكم ابن مسعود
His noble deeds speak on Sa'd's authority, nor did they stray
Its glories have narrated about Saad, and not swerved
In justice, then, from the judgment of Ibn Mas'ud.
With justice then from the judgment of Ibn Masud
