    That morning we plucked, as wit ripened,

    Blossoms of expression from the gardens of speech.

    My soul be ransom for a fair one who never betrayed his pledge of love

    To a dear companion, nor there broke his pledge to me.

    When the beautiful maiden visits and he visits me,

    I say, 'Go away from me, with a thousand farewells.'

    And if I say, 'You are the bān tree,' he turns away in anger,

    And says, 'Has the bān tree the suppleness of my form?'

    بظلماء ألفَينا لهيبَ ضرام

    The tawny wine blazed in his cheeks;

    In darkness we found a blaze of burning fire.

    سَكِرْتُ بها قبلَ المدام بعامِ

    And sobering up is far beyond me, for love has its intoxication;

    I grew drunk on it a year before wine.
