Tell, O Saʿd, the dwellers by the ghada trees

that the ghada fires burn beneath my ribs.

The day they left, he complained of them in burning anguish—

    wet-eyed beneath my ribs.

Lovesick, if he pours out tears, they flow from

    a burning liver and a terror-stricken heart.

He drank love unmixed [unclear word], and so he does not

mingle tears with anything but fresh blood.

May God not protect you, she-camels that sped away

bearing suns that set after rising.

They left me in the throes of death after

resolving, on the day of separation, to depart.

Estrangement came, and you had no

assurance that such estrangement would not occur.

And is it not enough for you, from a lovesick sufferer,

what you have seen of my consuming love and devotion?

    One consumed by love complains of you in his passion;

he has complained only to one who does not hear.

He seeks healing after your departure, or so he imagines,

in Najd's east wind and the flashing lightning.

    إنَّها يا سَعْدُ جهدُ المستطيع

    This is the limit of my patience apart from you;

indeed, O Saʿd, it is all one can manage.
