مولايَmy lord قَدindeed حانhas come الوَداعُfarewell
مولايَ قَد حان الوَداعُ
وقدand indeed عزَمْتُI have resolved علىupon المَسيرِdeparture
وقد عزَمْتُ على المَسيرِ
My lord, the hour of parting has come,
My lord, the time for farewell has come,
My Master, farewell is nigh
And I have resolved to journey on.

كمhow often زَرْتُI have visited حضرتَكyour presence الَّتيwhich
كم زَرْتُ حضرتَك الَّتي
ماnot زلتُI have ceased to be منهاfrom it فيin حبورjoy
ما زلتُ منها في حبور
How often I have visited your august presence,
How often I have come into your presence,
How often have I visited your abode
Which has always filled me with delight,
from which I have ever drawn joy,
Where I was immersed in love
ورجَعْتُand I returned عنكfrom you بنائلٍwith bounty
ورجَعْتُ عنك بنائلٍ
غمرٍabundant وبالخيرand with goodness الكثيرplentiful
غمرٍ وبالخير الكثير
And returned from you bearing a gift
and returned from you with bounty,
And returned from you with wishes
Abundant and laden with plentiful good.
abundant, and with goodness in plenty.
Fulfilled, and abundant goodness
واللهand God يعلَمُknows أنّنيthat I
والله يعلَمُ أنّني
عنin regard to شكرthanking فضلكyour bounty فيin قصورshortcoming
عن شكر فضلك في قصور
God knows that I

Fall short of duly thanking you for your favor.

ياO مفرَداًone who is unique فيin عَصرهhis age
يا مفرَداً في عَصره
بالفضلِin excellence معدومnonexistent النظيرthe equal
بالفضلِ معدوم النظير
O you, peerless in your age,
O one unique in his age,
O peerless in your time
In virtue utterly without equal;
in excellence, without an equal.
With unmatched nobility
ياO يوسُفَYusuf البدرthe full moon الَّذيthat
يا يوسُفَ البدر الَّذي
يسموrises علىabove البدرthe full moon المنيرthe shining
يسمو على البدر المنير
O Joseph, the moon that
O Yusuf, the full moon that
O Joseph of the full moon
Rises above the radiant moon!
soars above the shining full moon.
Transcending the brilliant moon
ماnot ليfor me بغيركof anyone other than you حاجةٌa need
ما لي بغيرك حاجةٌ
كغِنىlike the independence of الخطيرthe eminent person عنfrom الحقيرthe lowly person
كغِنى الخطير عن الحقير
I have no need of anyone but you,
I have no need of anyone but you,

As the eminent have no need of the lowly.

Like the wealthy disdains the poor
وسواكand anyone other than you ياO مولايmy lord لاnot
وسواك يا مولاي لا
واللهby God يخطرoccurs فيin ضميريmy mind
والله يخطر في ضميري
And none besides you, my lord—
And no one other than you, my lord,
And none but you, my Master
By God—ever crosses my mind.

ماnot كلُّevery وَرّادwater-seeker يفوزsucceeds
ما كلُّ وَرّاد يفوز
بموردwith a water source العذبthe sweet النميرthe pure
بمورد العذب النمير
Not every seeker of water succeeds
Not every seeker of water finds
Not every visitor attains
In reaching the sweet, abundant spring.

لاmay … not زلتَyou cease to be أهلاًworthy للجميلof kindness
لا زلتَ أهلاً للجميل
مَدىthroughout اللياليthe nights والشهورand the months
مَدى الليالي والشهور
May you remain forever disposed to gracious deeds,
May you ever remain worthy of kindness,
You remain worthy of favor
