May God send rain upon the neighbors around Hajir,

and drench their dwellings, despite the distance.

For they are nothing but killing grounds for lions,

and I indeed long to be one of their slain.

And a maiden, like the sun in beauty and splendor—

I awaited her rising from between the curtains.

She lifts a veil from the radiance of the night's moon,

and lets her tresses fall over a face like dawn.

I remembered her while the necklace of tears came undone,

and my eyes had already spilled their blood for her.

And I said to Sa'd: Do not blame me for weeping,

and let love's passions and their yearnings be.

For have my inmost depths kindled anything but their sighs,

and have the lover's eyes let flow anything but their tears?

For my soul recalled, on Rama's slope,

nothing of the valley bend but what deepens its longing.

So recall nights from the time at al-Ghuwayr,

whose return I wished for—if only wishing could avail—

nights when I gave the reins to love,

and gave all my pleasures to youthful dalliance.
