May God pardon that beloved, even though he did wrong.
May Allah forgive that beloved, though he wronged me
The anguish of his rejection named me one who yearns for him.
The yearner summoned me with him in his enmity

His heart grew hard at the words of a slanderer and an envier,
His heart hardened at the words of a slanderer and envier
Yet I remember him tender in affection and gentle.
While my covenant with him was moist with tender love

One of the slender beauties, deadly in figure and eye,
With a glance and a smile his teeth and eyes gleamed
When he appeared, drowsy-eyed, in radiance.
As though his gaze and brows were armed with arrows
ففيand in لحظهhis glance استكفَىhe found sufficiency عنwithout الضربstriking بالظباwith sword blades

His glance sufficed, with no need to strike with blades,
With one look his gaze sufficed instead of striking with a stick
And his figure had no need to thrust with spears.
And with his stature he had no need to stab with a spear

What are the bān tree's branches beside him when he sways?
Where are the tender branches of sweet basil when he bends?
And what are tawny gazelles beside him when he gazes?
And where are the shy gazelles when he sings?

O you who rob me of patience through distance and separation,
What joy we knew in life for a night
And clothe me in a garment of sickness and wasting,
As the cups circled among us in rapture

A kohl-dark eye of yours has indeed bewitched me,
From a cup my troubles disappeared in drink
And your eyes were created only to bewitch.
And from a rosy cheek what flowers were plucked!

And many a night I kept awake, defying the watcher,
Till the meadows donned their morning splendor
As though the stars had eyes upon us.
And the lilies replaced the jasmine blossoms

Recall those nights though they're gone
As cups went round among us in delight.
Never to return to us again

From a cup of wine you sip for joy,
If such converse passed between us
And from a cheek's rose, what is there is plucked,
The branches of sweet basil would bend over it and bow

Until the garden of darkness withered with its dawn
And if the slanderer blamed me for passion
And exchanged violet blossoms for irises.
Proclaim whom you love, and spare me from hints

Recall those nights once more, though they have passed
To God I complain of his wronging me unjustly
And will not return to us after today.
I make a place in my breast so he'll lodge there

Whenever those stories pass between us,
I gesture toward the rising full moon
The bān tree inclines its branch toward them and bows.
And it's him my gesture means to indicate

And if the reproacher intervenes and censures love,
Oh woe my heart, how an eye has shot me
Then name your beloved openly, and spare me veiled names.
After learning well how to hunt its prey

To God I complain of a fawn's unjust treatment:
My friend, will I enjoy union in days of separation?
I lodge him within my heart, and he takes firm hold.
Perhaps a phantom may visit the eye and console it

I point to the full moon rising in the darkness,
For were it not for the tears flowing down my cheeks
And whoever alludes means him by the allusion.
I would be alone, with no companion to weep with me

Alas for my heart! How eyes shoot at it—
I kept faith with them though the distances have parted us
They learned to aim at game, then shot at us.
And affection was clearly declared between us

My two friends, might I be blessed with them in a moment's slumber,
Indeed I keep faith with affection as is its due
Perhaps a phantom will visit the eye late at night.
And none shall tear down the affection I have built

Were it not for those far away, I would not be shedding
No good is the love of a man whose heart changes
Tears falling singly, nor in pairs.
With the changing fortunes of time’s caprice

I kept my pledge to them, though separation carried them far,
A friend is he who loves me though he sees me not
And affection was made clear through sincerity, openly displayed.
And keeps faith with loved ones between us

ولاand let not يهدمنَّever destroy الوُدَّaffection عنديwith me منwhoever بنىbuilt
I indeed uphold affection's due,
Generous is every noble soul who gains wealth for giving
And let none who built affection with me tear it down.
And spends on the day of bounty the best he possessed

There is no good in a man's friendship if, when
If I’m the richest of all people
Time's vicissitudes change my fortunes, he changes too.
Without Salman I have no wealth

And preserves among us the affections of close friends;
I have made it an omen of blessing for my birds

And spends on the day of generosity the choicest of what he acquired.
But saw none lovelier than his splendor

Even if I needed the rest of mankind less than anyone,
Most generous of hand, abundant in bounty
Yet in no circumstance can I do without Salman.
Highest in rank, proudest in lineage

When the caller cries his name in answer,
How they talked on the day of bounty about him
At that name I rouse a bird, an auspicious omen of good fortune.
I said, “Here end the words of speech”

I surveyed the nobles for beauty and appearance,
And he continues to relate poetry about his virtues
And saw none more splendid or fairer than his radiance.
Tales of glory and grandeur, artfully told

With the most generous hand among them and the greatest bounty,
In every ode whose strands his genius harvests
And the loftiest rank, the most impregnable stronghold.

By my life! He who since I knew him
And I said, 'All stories end here.'

Poetry has never ceased to recount his generous deeds,
Stay far from me, by his loving side!
A tale of high honors, passed down from his eminence through a chain of transmission.

The praise-poets displayed their artistry in many ways.
Words of reproach, and blame that bore rebuke

My soul be ransom for the one who, ever since I knew him,
When an argument appears in his reproach
Has done good whenever fate dealt ill with a noble man.
Eloquence returns sincerity to speech that's gentle

An utterance containing conciliation and reproach.

Its truth renders an eloquent speaker tongue-tied.
Don't choose for me an abode of humiliation

My whole being has ever been tongues in your praise.

As befits one whose wont is benefaction

Nor did I think you would listen to a liar
Then do not choose the abode of abasement as my home.
And accept the words of falsehood from bastard stock

And grow unjustly angry before ascertaining the truth.

Close to goodness, far from obscenity.

Be pleased then, my soul, leave what is past
And no, by God, your rejection was not easy to bear.
For still you are pleased, still enjoying favor
