The clouds watered the ruins and gave freely,
Of Salma's dwellings, effaced in ʿAlij.
Healing the homes of Salma from sickness.

In ceaseless showers, spilling and streaming.
The constant rain pouring down in floods.

Joys of its flowers have wilted and faded.

From the blending of youth and vitality,
An aim and a target through their union.

Yet sorrows oft pierce us like well-aimed arrows,
With it a sorrow within these entrails.
Planting seeds of grief deep in our marrow.

Through nights of turning about restless and aching,
Aged wine, delicious to my taste.
A vintage is steeped, its flavor I'm savoring.

I wed her, a virgin, to the son of the rainclouds,
Wed to Ibn Muzn, a virtuous man,
And blend her pure wine with a dark-lipped one's saliva.
Her essence I mix with my bitter pain.

Relishing in the joy of the sorrowful,
The pleasure of drinking companions was a prize.
For in their grief, much delight I gain.

A drunkard sobered from the wine of youthful dalliance,
Sober awakens the drunken spree,
And, after that folly, adopted forbearance.
Exchanging ignorance for wisdom and care.

He listened to the reprover, though he had been lovesick,
And cries out to the censor, once headstrong,
Deeming the reprover's reproach the harshest blame.
Seeing the censor's blame as too harsh and long.

Who can chide one brought to tears?
He wipes away, afraid they might betray him.
Tis kindness to gently shepherd along.

Wonders at which the tears bleed.
Tales leaving trails of tears asunder.

Would that misfortunes might reconcile with me,
For misfortunes have always been my adversary.
But troubles remain my constant plunder.

I pacify my free spirit with empty hopes,
From its hopes, of fulfillment by an appointed time.
Its desires unreached at each turn and scope.

Astray, I reason and say perhaps, maybe, when,
And my saying, 'Perhaps,' 'maybe,' and 'not yet.'
Yet languor drives while fate lands blow upon blow.

And if I firmly decide on a mission,
The calamities of time nock an arrow at me?
The hand of destiny thwarts my volition.

With ignorance, fools are named wise,
Bounds it never crossed of old.
And tales I mocked are seen through their eyes.

And does the one I mocked drink his fill while I thirst?
Take the good and leave the blights.

And in character, second to none in his part.

The noble lineage that rises so high,
And was the prophetic essence in bodily form.
None can ever surpass it, reach its sky.

And it never ceased to rub the foe's nose in dust.
Nor the envious find in it a flaw to pick.

The magnificent moon and lion so bold.

But make unbelievers scatter in vain.

By them, the heretics depart wounded.
Leaving the most eloquent tongues distraught.

When religion was close to decay.
None beside God's rule could ever be keen.

Spreading your favors to all tribes and races.

The ignorant from envy hide your glory,
Darkness could never conceal the light.
But darkness cannot veil sun's light, that's the story.

Your virtues like stars, this is not exaggeration,
If ever a blind man's eye denies them.
Only the blind of heart show negation.

And praise of anyone but you was unjust.
To praise other than you is such calamity.
