فيin رحمةmercy اللهGod وغفرانهand His forgiveness
في رحمة الله وغفرانه
وفيand in المحلِّthe abode الأَشْرَفِthe noblest الأَمْكَنِthe most secure
وفي المحلِّ الأَشْرَفِ الأَمْكَنِ
In God's mercy and forgiveness,
In God's mercy and forgiveness,
And in the noblest, most secure abode,
In the most noble and perfect place,
منhe who كانَwas فيin الدُّنياthis world بهاin it محسناًdoing good
من كانَ في الدُّنيا بها محسناً
فعادso he returned فيin الأخرىthe next life إلىto محسنa benefactor
فعاد في الأخرى إلى محسن
Is he who did good in this world,
One who was good to people in this world,
And so returned in the next life to One who does good.
Returns in the next as one who does good.
أصابَهُstruck him الرَّاميthe marksman علىwith عمدهhis deliberate intent
أصابَهُ الرَّامي على عمده
منfrom حيثwhere لمdid not يشعرperceive ولمand did not يفطنnotice
من حيث لم يشعر ولم يفطن
The marksman struck him deliberately,
The archer struck him deliberately,
From where he neither sensed it nor took notice.
When he least expected and was unaware.
وماتand he died فيin ساعتهhis very hour صائماًfasting
ومات في ساعته صائماً
فيin شهرthe month of صَوْمfasting المسلمthe Muslim المؤْمِنthe believing
في شهر صَوْم المسلم المؤْمِن
And he died that very hour, fasting,
He died fasting,
In the month of the believing Muslim's fast.
In the month of fasting of the faithful Muslim.
فيin رميةٍa shot ماتhe died شهيداًas a martyr بهاby it
في رميةٍ مات شهيداً بها
جرتflowed عليهover him أدمعtears الأعيُنthe eyes
جرت عليه أدمع الأعيُن
He died a martyr from a shot;
He died a martyr from an arrow,
Tears flowed from eyes over him.
That drew tears from all eyes.
دمٌblood لعمريby my life لمdid not يمتdie ثارهits claim to vengeance
دمٌ لعمري لم يمت ثاره
علىover مَدَىthe span of العمرlife ولمand not يدفنbe buried
على مَدَى العمر ولم يدفن
Blood—by my life—its claim to vengeance has not died
His blood, by my life, its revenge is not forgotten,
Throughout life, nor has it been buried.
Throughout time it is not buried.
أوىhe took refuge إلىto اللهGod فياso, oh حبَّذاhow blessed!
أوى إلى الله فيا حبَّذا
مأوىa refuge جميلgood الظَّنّopinion مستيقنcertain
مأوى جميل الظَّنّ مستيقن
He took refuge with God—how blessed
He went to God, how excellent,
The refuge of one who thinks well of Him and is certain!
A beautiful guess, certain.
فيin جنَّةthe Garden of الخلدeternity الَّتيwhich أزلفتwas brought near
في جنَّة الخلد الَّتي أزلفت
أَرَّخْتهI dated it مكانthe abode of عبدAbd (servant of) الغنيal-Ghani (the Self-Sufficient)
أَرَّخْته مكان عبد الغني
In the Garden of Eternity, which was brought near,
To the eternal Garden brought near,
I dated it: 'The abode of Abd al-Ghani.'
Made a place for the Servant of the Rich.
