And pour from my eye the flowing tears.

And suffer the blaze of sorrow's fire whenever I see

Your place empty, though it was not so yesterday.

Though weeping is of no avail, nor can

Sorrow restore to me the past of that time.

And one like me may rightly melt away in his very soul

From grief, or weep for deserted dwellings.

And a night visitor, seeking honor, full of hope,

Endured night travel and crossed the wildernesses.

Generosity and bounty departed with you, O departed one,

And after you, the garden of virtue withered.

Now at evening I am found weeping, my heart in pain.

Until the Merciful decreed that we should meet no more.

Slain by death, though he could fell a crouching lion.

If a noble champion could be ransomed from death,

And depart, saved from death by a ransom,

I was cared for, and you were my guardian.

And attained a lofty station beside your Lord.

Did you make us hear or deafen us? Alas for you, herald!

Streaming, bloody tears upon the cheeks.

'One so near to kindness has now become far away.'

If firmly rooted mountains are shaken afterward.

May morning rains water you, as often you watered me

In my thirst, with morning showers from your two palms.

And may a pouring shower from the rainclouds greet you at evening,

And a pouring shower from the rainclouds greet you at dawn.

And after you, can solace find anyone consoled?

So hopes are attained only as wishes.

Abundant gifts, nor freed a captive from bondage.

Have lost in him a shade spreading wide over humankind,

Throughout time never ceased to protect against fate.

For whom shall I weave poetry whose wording is subtle,

Whose styles are delicate and meanings delightful?

Verse and its weaving held no sweetness for me

Unless the poetry was adorned with mention of him.

Every one, leaving nothing for other men.

Against the blows of the days, a keen Yemeni sword.

How many favors you bestowed on me, and how much sorrow

I now lament, from the burning anguish of separation!

When my eye scatters its tears over you,

I string rhymes for my sorrows over you.

    وبعد لا أشتاق إلاَّ المراثيا

    Before this, I used to yearn for songs of praise;

Afterward, I yearn for nothing but elegies.
