How often I soften toward one grown hard in his rejection,
How gentle I have become to those hardened against me
until I thought his heart a boulder.
That I thought their hearts were frozen

and set fuel ablaze with the heat of passion.
And kindled from the heat of passion the fuel

A liver melting, and anguish without end,
A melting liver and endless sorrow
and tears from an eye accustomed to sleeplessness.
And the tears of eyes accustomed to sleeplessness

You denied knowing me in the days of separation,
You denied knowing me after promising fidelity
and granted me rejection after union.
And after union you became harsh

You wore my patience threadbare after you parted and went far away,
After your distance, my patience was tested
and clothed me in a new robe of sickness.
And I was clothed in the garb of sickness anew

But for those wide eyes, separation would be unknown
Had it not been for shedding tears the eye would not have known fidelity
to one lovesick and stricken with love for you.
To one passionately in love with you since long ago

A day when the fires of my heart find peace

I studied the face of fortunate Muhammad,
I looked upon the fortune of the blessed Muhammad
and saw an auspicious rising star for those who seek his bounty.
And saw the ascending fortune of its seeker good

I faced the turns of ill fortune with his good fortune,
I met misfortunes with his bliss
so he turned those ill fortunes into good fortunes.
And that returned those misfortunes to bliss

And I read omens from fortune's bird calling his name,
And Ideterred the bird of bliss from calling his name
and discerned from it an auspicious rising star.
And saw in it an ascending good fortune

I gladdened glory's eye with praises of you,
I acknowledged the eye of glory in you with praises
and with praise of you enraged an adversary and an envier.
And provoked an envier and hater against you

I looked upon a pillar of the dawn’s cleft

He continues to grant us bounty through his merit
with generosity and liberality that delight the hopeful.
Bounty that makes hopeful ones happy

I have indeed praised the illustrious, and I see nothing
And though I praised the glorious I did not see
but praise that convinces and benefits.
Except praise that was deficient and unprofitable

Lords of all the sons of this age
The lords, the prime sons of the age altogether
have inherited noble virtues, newly acquired and ancestral.
Inherited the perfections of former and latter days

His noble generosity consumes worldly riches, while he acquires
His perfections make transient things pass away and gain
renown immortalized forever in praise.
A remembrance made immortal in praise

So I have risen through them to the highest rank
and, ascending, reached the pathways of heaven.
And attained the paths to heaven in ascent

And it shows you, if the minds of people of resolve went astray
a sound judgment through which he shows you the right course.
An opinion through which it shows you the right way

And beside giving they seem like clouds
and deem them lions on the day of battle.
And you imagine them beside encountering as lions

I have seen in you, for anyone who would seek more.
I saw in you for one who wanted increase

Fair qualities and noble virtues in generosity have refused
Beauties and perfections in humanity refused

You conferred blessings on me I stoop to bear
so I strung necklaces and strings of jewels in your praise.
So I strung for you necklaces and knots
