He sighed with anguish whose embers blazed,
He breathed a sigh for inner turmoil set aflame,
and set a stream of tears flowing, its drops pouring down.
So tears flowed and droplets rained like a flood.

He spent the night suffering worry, never relenting
By night he suffered endless worries and griefs
in its advance and renewed assaults upon his heart.
That weighed upon his heart though he showed boldness and cleverness.

He wished for goals—though wishing brings no gain—
He wished in vain, for wishing brings no wants to men,
his age would be worthy of him, were it not for baseness.
Fate would be kind, were it not for life's vileness.

Before his wishes stand countless obstacles,
Before his hopes stood barriers strong
which constrict his breast even in a spacious home.
That even in the spacious abode straitened his chest.

He bore life's burdens and met
unawares, time's reversals and treachery.
The caprice of time and its treachery.

The unhappiest of this age's sons is its wisest,
Of all people in this age, he found most woe
and the weariest of its people is its noble, free man.
And most weariness of spirit fell to his lot.

Many a man whose belly is empty of anything shameful
How oft, though ashamed, the poor man's belly rumbles,
has a back bowed beneath the burdens of fatherhood.
While responsibilities weigh down his back!

Daily he halts again and again,
stirring anguish in his innards and making it linger.
His heart aflutter and nerves a-tremble.

As days go by his complaints grow long.
and he stays awake through a night whose dawn has not broken.
At night he wakes though dawn is at hand.

He watches the flashing gleam of ambition's lightning;
He saw in his hopes, now shattered, once
it sparkles, yet it does not deceive him.
A gleam like lightning, which now deceives him not.

So he came to lower his gaze from it; short of it,
So he turns his gaze from them and their course,
a young man's waiting brings his affairs to humiliation.
For the youth's road leads but to harm and injustice.

Yet still to honour he pledges his soul
in proud refusal; no pledge bound him to abasement.
Unbowed, and no disgrace can make him yield.

By my life! A man so hardened to fate,
whose rock does not crack amid calamities.
Whose rock-firm soul the blows of fortune rend not!

And God's veil spread protecting over him.

Worldly matters, all of them, are enough for me,
when time grieved me, none but he brought me joy.
I care only that time has not marred him.

As time sheds its light that reveals its secrets.

How could they, when his river has flooded the sea?

From his own soul came the call to kindness, for its sake;
To righteousness his soul gently calls him,
such are his innate traits, and such is his way.
Such is his way and his nature's balance.

The teats of every milch beast flowed abundantly for him
For him successive generations of nobility

Have rolled like pearls so that God is his precious pearl.

Through him, this age cleared itself of its guilt;
Time excuses itself through him for its own sins,
so do not reproach the night: dawn is its excuse.
So do not blame the night or dawn for its neglect.

Nor any burden it bears a real burden.

If the stars sought to praise you in verse

Their stringing of pearls would not begin to express you.
