فَلَمْbut did not يَرَsee ياO سُلَيْمىSulayma منthe one whom يُحِبُّhe loves
فَلَمْ يَرَ يا سُلَيْمى من يُحِبُّ
He looked about among the dwellings of Mayy's kin,
He wandered the dwellings of the tribe of Maysan
But, O Sulayma, he did not see the one he loves.
Yet did not find, O Suleima, one who loves him
فلمso did not يرقأstop weeping لهfor him إذat ذاكthat time طرفan eye
فلم يرقأ له إذ ذاك طرف
ولمand did not يَصْبِرْendure patiently لهfor him إذat ذاكthat time قلبa heart
ولم يَصْبِرْ له إذ ذاك قلب
So his eye did not cease weeping then,
No eyelid then softened for him
Nor could his heart endure then.
No heart then had patience for him

تَشُبُّ من الشجون وليس تخبو
And beneath his ribs is a fire of longing,
And beneath his ribs was a fire of anguish
It blazes from sorrows and never dies down.
Kindled by grief, unextinguished

He is reproached for love by those who do not understand;
Blamed for love without knowledge
But does a lovesick man heed reproachers?
Does he who blames listen to blame when love-sick?

And faded ruins on a soft plain—
The ruins of Maysan reminded me
clouds upon clouds have watered its ruins—
Of times their rains poured down showers and showers

Memories of friends there pained me
and a life all pleasure and play,
And days spent entirely in play and nonsense

And reunion joins us with the one we love,
And we would gather where love allowed
where a mountain valley enfolds us and the tribe,
In places that sheltered us, alive, as one

There my soul found rest

I reproach time and fate without end
