ياO قدوةَexemplar of العُلماءthe scholars ياO منone who عِلْمُهhis learning
يا قدوةَ العُلماء يا من عِلْمُه
بحرٌa sea ومنهلٌand a fount فضلِهhis bounty مَوْرودُsought out
بحرٌ ومنهلٌ فضلِه مَوْرودُ
O exemplar of scholars, O you whose knowledge
O exemplar of scholars, O you whose learning
is an ocean, and the wellspring of whose bounty is thronged;
is a sea, and whose fount of bounty is sought out.
يهنيكcongratulations to you مولاناour master بمنصبكon your appointment الَّذيwhich
يهنيك مولانا بمنصبك الَّذي
فازَtriumphed الوليَّthe friend بهthrough it وخابand was thwarted حسودan envier
فازَ الوليَّ به وخاب حسود
Congratulations, our master, upon your office, through which
Congratulations, our master, on your appointment, through which
the loyal friend prospered and the envious one was thwarted.
the friend has triumphed and the envier been thwarted.
فلقدfor indeed حباكhas endowed you اللهGod بالفضلwith excellence الَّذيthat
فلقد حباك الله بالفضل الَّذي
يسموrises high علىin رغمspite of العدىthe foes ويسودand holds sway
يسمو على رغم العدى ويسود
For God has indeed endowed you with the excellence that
For God has indeed endowed you with excellence that
rises despite your foes and reigns supreme—
rises high despite the foes and holds sway.
فيin حالَتيthe two capacities of عِلْمٍlearning وبذلand bestowing مكارمnoble favors
في حالَتي عِلْمٍ وبذل مكارم
فعلىso in كلاboth الحالينthe two capacities أَنْتَyou مفيدa source of benefit
فعلى كلا الحالين أَنْتَ مفيد
in both states: possessing knowledge and dispensing noble gifts;
In learning and in bestowing noble favors,
in either state, you bring benefit.
in both capacities, then, you confer benefit.
وحَبَتْكand favored you ألطافthe gracious favors of الوزيرthe vizier عليAli الرضاal-Rida
وحَبَتْك ألطاف الوزير علي الرضا
مَنone who ذكرهhis renown فيin الخافقينEast and West حميدpraiseworthy
مَن ذكره في الخافقين حميد
And the favors of the vizier Ali Rida have graced you—
And you have been favored by the kindness of the vizier Ali al-Rida,
he whose name is praised throughout East and West:
whose name is praised in East and West.
ملكٌa king فأمَّاand as for حِلْمُهhis forbearance فموقّرٌthen it is dignified
ملكٌ فأمَّا حِلْمُه فموقّرٌ
ضافٍample وأمَّاand as for بطشهhis onslaught فشديدthen it is fierce
ضافٍ وأمَّا بطشه فشديد
a sovereign whose clemency is venerable
A king: as for his forbearance, it is dignified
and ample, while his might is fierce.
and ample; as for his onslaught, it is fierce.
ولاّكhe appointed you إفتاءَissuing religious rulings for الأنامhumankind محبّذاapprovingly
ولاّك إفتاءَ الأنام محبّذا
رأيٌa decision لعَمريby my life إنَّهindeed it is لسديدsurely sound
رأيٌ لعَمري إنَّه لسديد
He appointed you to issue fatwas for mankind—how admirable
He entrusted you, approvingly, with issuing religious rulings for humankind—
a judgment! By my life, it is truly sound.
a decision, by my life, that is surely sound.
إنَّindeed الشريعةthe sacred Law فيكin you لابسthe wearer of تاجهاher crown
إنَّ الشريعة فيك لابس تاجها
قرمٌa mighty chief وحامِلٌand the bearer of سيفهاher sword صنديدa valiant champion
قرمٌ وحامِلٌ سيفها صنديد
Indeed, the Sacred Law has in you a wearer of its crown—
Truly, the sacred Law has in you a wearer of her crown—
a noble lord—and a bearer of its sword, a valiant champion.
a mighty chief—and a bearer of her sword, a valiant champion.
وتنوفand you excel فيin كلّall العلومthe branches of learning فأرِّخواso record the date
وتنوف في كلّ العلوم فأرِّخوا
نَوَّفْتَyou have excelled فيin الإفتاءissuing religious rulings ياO محمودMahmoud
نَوَّفْتَ في الإفتاء يا محمود
You tower above in every science; so inscribe the date:
And you excel in every branch of learning; so record the date:
“You have towered in the issuing of fatwas, O Mahmud.”
You have excelled in issuing religious rulings, O Mahmoud.
