أَهوًىa love? غيرُother than هواهاlove for her قدalready سلاهاforgot her
Entreat her about my heart, and ask her:
Ask her about my heart and console her,
Has a love other than hers already made it forget her?
Does she desire someone other than her beloved who consoled her?
واذكرانيand you two, mention me ياO خليليَّmy two dear friends لهاto her
فَعَساهاso perhaps she تَرحَمُwill pity الصَّبَّthe lovesick lover عساهاperhaps she will
And speak of me to her, my two dear friends;
And remind her of me, O my friend,
So perhaps she will pity the lovesick lover—perhaps.
Perhaps she will have mercy on the enduring lover, hoping for her favor.
واسأَلاand you two, ask عنabout مهجةٍa heart داميةٍbleeding

And ask about a bleeding heart,
Ask about a wounded heart,
Struck by an arrow of passion for the one who shot it.
Struck by the arrow of love's passion from the one who shot it.

I pass no night except in restlessness;
I spend the night sleepless and anxious,
Longing denies my eye its sleep.
Sorrow prevents pleasure from my eyes however much I try to resist it.

O passion for statue-like beauties! Never-ending
O persistent love with the loved ones that does not diminish,
Are the sorrows in my breast, whose span has lengthened.
Longing in ardour has increased over time.

And in my heart is the gazelle of the bower, whose
And in my heart is the fawn of affection,
Lovesick lover desires nothing but love for her.
None but her desires her passion.

She left me burning, and I see
She left me burning with agony as I recall
That remembering the beloved is the fire of the lover's soul.
The memory of my beloved, whom I desire.

She claimed that after she left I had forgotten
She claimed that after her
A face—nothing else has ever stirred my longing.
Nothing could pain me but her.

No—by her in whom I find solace, infatuated with her,
No! By her I am misled, by her
And who melted my heart with longing: it has not forgotten her.
My heart melted with passion that she ignited.

And the talebearer went to her with what
The slanderer approached her with what
Distressed her, so that she persisted in her coldness.
Displeased her until she persisted in her disdain.

فشكَتْهso she complained of him يومon the day صدَّتْshe turned away وشكاهاand he complained of her
She turned from her lovesick lover out of suspicion;
She turned away from her lover in suspicion,
So she complained of him the day she turned away, and he of her.
So he complained the day she turned away and blamed him.

Had she known, when she sought to torment him,
If she knew when she sought to torment him,
What he endures for love of her, it would have sufficed her.
What he suffers for his love of her, it would suffice her.

What harm would it do her in love if she
No blame to her for the passion, had she
Listened one day to her young lover about union?
But heard of union one day, she would be inclined to it.
فشفىand so he cured داءthe sickness الهوىof love منfrom مهجةٍa heart
عَلِمَknows اللهGod بماof what ضمَّتْcontained حشاهاits depths
Then he could cure a heart of love's sickness—
So the illness of love was cured in one
God knows what its depths have held.
God knew what her innermost thoughts concealed.
