A lightning flash sweeping lowland and upland stirred my heartache.

I poured tears over it, two at a time and one by one.

And I spent the night with a flame in my heart like its fire,

blazing in the folds of darkness and burning bright.

stirring the silver of my tears into gold?

I seek from Salma a visit by her phantom,

but how can a phantom visit a sleepless eye?

How long the night in which you grant no union,

as though you had made the lovesick one's night eternal!

How long must I conceal my anguish, unable to endure,

while you, O passion, prevent me from standing firm?

kindled by passion, to settle one day and die down?

within me at the memory of Zamya, it would yield no spark.

All this comes only from the radiance of a lightning flash that appeared,

making this heart rise and sit in unrest.

and grazed on life, then at its most luxuriant.

on the morning we plucked roses from a graceful beauty's cheek.

rainclouds that do not heed the camel-driver's chant,

rumbling like a roused male camel who, whenever

startled by a whip-stroke, bellows and foams.

So may it greet the dwelling's traces, faded as they are,

until the eye sees them drenched with dew.

The dwelling must halt the caravan an hour

beside it, and sorrows must be renewed.

And a night whose shooting stars, in its final hours,

seemed to tear apart a black cloak of night.
