ياO داءَthe ailment of قلبيmy heart فيin الهوىlove ودَوائيand my remedy
يا داءَ قلبي في الهوى ودَوائي
Do you, I wonder, know my ailment and my cure?
Do you know my malady and my remedy,
O ailment of my heart in love, and my remedy!
O disease of my heart in love and my cure?

Your heart did not soften toward me, as though my complaint
Your heart was not softened towards me as if my complaint
Was addressed to the ear of a deaf rock.
Was to the hearing of a deaf rock.

And longing intensified its sorrows in me,
Ah, how fierce the torment I endure!
Oh, how much I suffer from separation!

How strange for one whose heart passion has seized—
Strange is he whom love has gripped his heart,
How can he, with such a heart, be counted among the living?
How can he count himself among the living?

Do the slanderers know that my youth
Came from oryx glances and gazelle necks?
Was spent gazing at the beautiful gazelle and the shy doe?

And I tasted the bitterness of blame from she
Who settled beyond the valley bend on the sandy plain?
Who came to me in distress after despair.

The life I saw after the one of beautiful countenance
Since the lady with the lovely countenance departed.
Was not good living.

So when shall I quench my thirst at a young gazelle's lips,
So when can I echo with joyful tidings
Who broke his pledges and did not repay my faithfulness?
The one who broke pacts and was not true to his loyalty?

We had been bound in a pact of affection and brotherhood.
We were sincere friendship and brotherhood.

And one evening he went far away with the departing caravan;
And he joined the company of the slanderers on an evening.
Where are the riding camels, and where is that distant one?
Where are the friends? And where is the isolated one?

أشكو طِعان الصعدة السمراء
When the peer of his stature swayed, I began
When the justice of his loyalty was distorted,
To lament the thrusts of the straight, dusky spear.
I complain of the bite of the brunette coquette,

And I answer the one who asks my heart about its ailment:
And I answer the questioner about her disease:
My ailment is love of you—may you never suffer my ailment.
My disease is your love, so I have no other malady.

His healer did not know—by that touch withheld—
He did not know - and forbidden touch is its cure -
That the remedy must accord with the ailments.
That the remedy is made possible by the diseases.

Hasten, O cup-bearer, solemnly to the cups,
And pass me the choicest ruddy wine.
And pass me the clear drink.

Who were radiant full moons to the beholder's eye.
Who were, in days gone by, the delight of this onlooker.

News of them has passed as though it were
The east wind's fragrance from a luxuriant garden.
The scent of youth from a garden of melody.

Their passions contended with me in love,
Then love passed sentence on me—what a sentence!
And love judged against me, what a judgment!

Had I known your treachery against your lover,
I would not have given you power over my entrails.
I would not have let you into my heart.

The well-wisher reproached me, but I did not heed his reproach,
Advice blamed me but I did not listen to its blame,
And I turned away from him, to my misery and suffering.
And I turned away from it in my misery and fatigue.

Had I listened to the counselors!
Had I listened to the advice of the advisors.

How fare the dwellings now the lady of the sanctuary has gone?
How are the dwellings after the inhabitants of passion?
I remember them, moonlit in every quarter.
My covenant with them was like the full moons.

When I stood at daybreak at their dwellings,
I greeted them with the greeting of the noble.
I greeted them with the greeting of generous people.

The days returned me to their inhabitants
Like the ignorant's enmity toward the learned.
Like the enmity of ignoramuses towards scholars.

What fault for the nights if they looked
They look at me with a blind eye.
At my virtues with a blind eye?

From being humbled in the courtyard of the base.
From being humiliated in the valley of vileness.

My praise is for the goodness of Abu al-Thana.
Then let my praise be for the beauty of my father.

Sublimities rose high above the sublime.

And that nature's gentleness is the gentleness of water.
And with gentle temperament, gentle like water.

So they were depicted as stars of Capricorn.

We sensed from the clouds of his attainment
Unceasing in beneficence through his blessings.
A succession of favors with blessings.

Far from matching his generosity is the rain's downpour,
Alas! His generosity relates to the living,
While rainfall depends on the seasonal stars.
While the rain is held back by the clouds.

Surging tides of generosity overflow upon him.
So its heavy rains pour upon him.

So by your judgment the banner of jurists rose.
