Do you forget, Salih, that grim day,

The morning you were satirized in al-Suwaydi’s verse;

The morning you were lampooned in al-Suwaydi's verse,

ويوماً قد ضُرِبْتَ بكلِّ نعلٍ

ويوماً قد ضُرِبْتَ بكلِّ نعلٍ

ثقيلٍ فوق رأسكَ بالجُنَيْد

ثقيلٍ فوق رأسكَ بالجُنَيْد

And the day you were struck with every sandal,

Heavy upon your head, at al-Junayd?

Heavy, upon your head at al-Junayd?

لقد أصبحتَ للشعراء مرمًى

لقد أصبحتَ للشعراء مرمًى

فكلٌّ قال هذا كلبُ صَيْد

You have become a target for the poets,

You have indeed become a target for the poets,

And each one says: “This is a hunting dog.”

So each said, 'This is a hunting dog.'
