When you see me, O Sa'd, with longing tormenting me,

Through the burning passion that remembrance has stirred,

I am urging mounts toward Najd, as though

They had the heart of one heartsick for Najd.

Swimming along, they fold up the wastes with their strides,

And sleek, saddled steeds play with their forelegs.

They tire of the dwelling where they have stayed,

But they do not tire of the swift trot.

When they breathe in the breezes of Najd, they are roused

By heartache stirred by the scent of wormwood and bay laurel.

Perhaps, O eye, I shall see those beloveds of ours,

Even if they have followed closeness with rejection.

Who, then, will carry my beloveds a greeting from me,

Telling them I remain true to that pledge?

When a lovesick lover's yearning soul remembers them—

Flung into remoteness and distance by separation's vicissitudes—

    Fire blazes within my breast,

For the dwellers of Wadi al-Ghada—what a blaze!

Oh, if only I had my beloveds' patience in love,

And my beloveds had as much longing as I have!

I remembered you, while tears scattered their string—

By your lives, a string of pearls from a necklace.

And indeed I beg the eye for its water,

Despite our nearness to you, though it is of no avail.

And I conceal my passion from my companions, yet at times

I do reveal it in tears among those dear to me.

And how can a burning anguish I have concealed stay hidden,

For fear of the tale-bearer, when I betray it despite myself?

And the tale-bearers have already read two lines of longing,

From what those tears have written on my cheek.

So take from my eyes what bears witness to heartache,

And from the heat of my breaths, proof of passion.
