What longing have you enfolded within your ribs,

and let your tears flow for what you felt?

And of what state of love do you complain—

    a terror-stricken heart and a terrifying yearning?

I recalled our days in the protected pasture,

when graceful maidens adorned those dwellings.

And I could not tell, when you recalled those people,

whether you shed tears for them or crimson blood.

And your reprover said when he saw you—

though you had never disclosed your longing—

For some reason you pour out these tears

when you glimpse flashing lightning at the valley bend.

And when you lost your heart's beloved,

that morning at al-Ghamim, you lost your sleep.

And on the morning when love called you

to bear passion, you were attentive and obedient.

And I had counseled you before that,

and I reproached you more, yet you grew more infatuated.

And when you wished to shoulder passion,

you shouldered passion, yet you will not be able to bear it.

And you began to weep for full moons that had set,

which for a time had risen over the encampment.

And as for our days in the season of youth,

though they have not come journeying back—

if you weep for them in sorrow, O Hudhaym,

then take me to your side, so we may weep together.
