سقى الله هذا القبرَ من صيّب الحيا
وصُبّand may it be poured عليهupon it كلّevery يومday مَصابُهits downpour
وصُبّ عليه كلّ يوم مَصابُه
May God water this grave with the rain-clouds of life-giving showers;
May God water this grave with a downpour of rain,
may their downpour be poured upon it every day.
And may its downpour be poured upon it every day.
بهin it حلَّcame to rest ذوa possessor of علمknowledge وفهمand understanding وحكمةand wisdom
به حلَّ ذو علم وفهم وحكمة
وأمسىand came to be إلىto الربّthe Lord الكريمthe generous ذهابُهhis departure
وأمسى إلى الربّ الكريم ذهابُه
Within it rests a man of knowledge, understanding, and wisdom,
In it rests a man of knowledge, understanding, and wisdom,
whose journey has now led him to the generous Lord.
And his departure was to the generous Lord.
ومعروفٌand Maʿruf الكرخيُّal-Karkhi مذsince كانَwas جارَهhis neighbor
ومعروفٌ الكرخيُّ مذ كانَ جارَه
فأشرقَso shone فيهwithin it ماthat which هناكthere ترابهhis dust
فأشرقَ فيه ما هناك ترابه
Ever since Ma‘ruf al-Karkhi became his neighbor,
And since Maʿruf al-Karkhi was his neighbor,
the dust of this place has shone with all that is there.
His dust lying there shone within it.
بشهرin the month of ربيعRabiʿ الآخرal-Akhir ارتاحfound rest أوor مضىpassed away
بشهر ربيع الآخر ارتاح أو مضى
وأصبحَand came to be فيin أعلىthe highest الجنانthe gardens of Paradise جنابُهhis noble person
وأصبحَ في أعلى الجنان جنابُه
In the month of Rabi‘ al-Thani he found rest—or passed away—
In the month of Rabiʿ al-Akhir he found rest, or passed away,
and his noble person came to dwell in the loftiest gardens of Paradise.
And his noble person came to dwell in the highest gardens of Paradise.
وكانand was بعلمin the science of الطبّmedicine أعلمَthe most learned عالِمٍscholar
وكان بعلم الطبّ أعلمَ عالِمٍ
وللعَسكرand to the army المنصورthe victorious كانَwas انتسابُهhis affiliation
وللعَسكر المنصور كانَ انتسابُه
In medical knowledge, he was the most learned of scholars,
In the science of medicine he was the most learned of scholars,
and he belonged to the victorious army.
And he belonged to the victorious army.
لقدindeed فازattained بعدafter الموتdeath بالعفوwith pardon والرضاand favor
لقد فاز بعد الموت بالعفو والرضا
منfrom اللهGod يوفىis granted in full عفوَهHis pardon وثوابُهand His reward
من الله يوفى عفوَه وثوابُه
After death, he indeed attained pardon and favor,
Indeed, after death he attained pardon and favor
receiving from God His pardon and reward in full.
From God, receiving His pardon and reward in full.
وآبَand he returned إلىto جنَّاتthe gardens of عدنٍEden فأرِّخواso record the date
وآبَ إلى جنَّات عدنٍ فأرِّخوا
عليٌّʿAli بجنَّاتin the gardens of الخلودeternity مآبهhis place of return
عليٌّ بجنَّات الخلود مآبه
He returned to the Gardens of Eden; so inscribe the date:
And he returned to the gardens of Eden, so record the date:
“Ali’s abode is in the gardens of eternity.”
ʿAli's final abode is in the gardens of eternity.
