Ah, who will help sleepless eyelids brimming with tears,

And the burning of thirsty hearts, O Hudhaym?

Thirsting for the coolness of those mouths, in which,

If my illness lies, there too lies my cure.

And companions who turned union into desertion, replacing

Their nearness, when they turned away, with coldness.

    ويا ويحَ دانٍ يحنُّ لنائي

    They withdrew, yet my yearning still reaches toward them;

And alas for one nearby who yearns for one far away!

O our neighbors, when you shunned us and departed,

And did not grant us even a single meeting,

Through affection's pledge I learned your treachery in love,

And you learned my fidelity in passion.

    كذلك إشفاقي وحسن بلائي

    I freely offered my soul to honor a pledge, while you withheld;

Such were my tender concern and the excellence of my devotion.

And concerning you, from you, before that, and against you,

I cast the reproachers' words behind me.

    ولا صانه قومي إذَنْ بفداء

    Freely yours is my blood, which love has shed unavenged;

Nor may my people then protect it by ransom.

Restore to us an hour of union, for it is

My highest aim from you, and my utmost wish.

    فجودوا على مضناكم بشفاء

    I found a sickness caused by you, not by anyone else;

So grant your stricken lover a cure.

If you will not visit me, even through your phantom,

Then do not hope, after that, for my survival.

    وما هكذا لو تنصفون جزائي

    Our beloveds, you have not treated us fairly in your love;

Were you fair, this would not be my recompense.

    فشِبْناه في ذكراكُمُ بدماء

    We remembered you while our tears were water we poured out;

Then, remembering you, we mixed them with blood.

And a heart's lifeblood that has announced its end.

The burning of yearning and grief assailed it in succession,

Until love left it nothing but a last flicker of life.

O Sa'd, do not reproach your brother: he has already been pierced

By his archer's arrow with the keenest force.

Struck down by wide eyes the moment they shot at him,

Struck down by love, yearning, and consuming distress.

Slain by chaste, 'Udhri love, he has been felled

By branchlike figures, or gazelles' glances.

As though I see sleeping death awaken in him

Whenever he spies lightning flashing after concealment.

And never did that lightning smile from them,

By your life, without bringing me to tears.

Why, then, do you reproach me for what has afflicted me

Of sickness, in ignorance? May you never suffer my illness!

I called upon you to draw forth tears for what I see,

Yet on the day of al-Ghamim you did not answer my appeal.

And this is Hudhaym: whenever his noble steed turns back

To a deserted spring encampment at al-Raqmatayn,

He recalls days with them that were brief,

Over which my misery and suffering grow long.

So he lets it flow, poured forth—a tear

That glistens; he stanches it with the edge of a cloak.

My two friends, if you will not stand by me in love,

Then where are your love for me and our brotherhood?

O Sa'd, I have been stricken, and I was frightened

By distance when separation from my companions grew real.

What ails the riding camels amid striving and anguish,

And amid unsettling moans of longing and bellowing?

By your Lord, urge them on and take their reins,

And travel at a pace neither slack nor slow.

To a dwelling whose people know no humiliation,

Where none who comes to them in hope is disappointed.

Far from you when poverty draws near.

    يطيبُ مصيفي عنده وشتائي

    A springtime of generosity: excellence never leaves his bounty;

Beside him, both my summer and my winter are pleasant.

And so put the rainclouds' downpour to the deepest shame.

As the east wind wafts incense.

In calamity without his bringing Dhuka's son—the dawn.

Even if they were stars in the sky.
