Come, let us visit Abu al-Khasib,

And tend the bountiful side of life.

We shall mingle with its people and dwell there,

In life's ease, with goodness and delight.

Generous folk, among whom I stayed as a stranger,

And they became the stranger's solace.

And Abd al-Wahid, renowned among them

For his long reach and spacious heart.

He is the gallant man with no fault in him,

Save an honor free of every blemish.

Indeed, we have yearned for that countenance—

Not even a lover's longing for the beloved compares.

So greet Ibn al-Mubarak, a generous man,

Dearer to hearts than hearts themselves.

He considers doing good his duty,

And acts of generosity a binding obligation.

Through his bounty we obtain worldly goods from him,

And return from him with the fullest share.

His beneficence resembled the downpour of morning clouds,

So we said: a lasting shower of pouring rain.

If those crying for help call upon him one day,

Then you are surely safe with the dispeller of woes.

And if you see cheerfulness appear in him,

Then rejoice in the imminent relief from him.

He delights when the bounty of his hands is sought,

And bends his body, delighted and jubilant.

And smiles radiantly in his guest's face,

While the face of time frowns fiercely.

The noblest of a band that was honorable and generous

To seekers of bounty on a day of hardship.

A generous man sprung from a generous man,

A noble man descended from a noble father.

I have seen the most generous men of many kinds,

And this man is the best of all those kinds.

And a man of stature, whom calamities have not shaken,

Nor the crashing blow of misfortune alarmed.

Nor has any soul lured him into abasement,

Nor has he drawn near the slightest fault.

A beacon from which counsel is drawn,

And from him comes the shot of the arrow that strikes true.

So I testify that he is peerless in noble attainments,

And I have no unsettling doubt about him.

Thus men of reason are dependent on him,

And behold, he is what the shrewd, discerning man seeks.

So they always submit their judgment to him,

As a patient is presented to a physician.

May the misers, numerous as they are, be your ransom,

Like slaughter-offerings of fat camels and aged she-camels,

On a day when, in his eyes, spending

Is harder for the coward than wars.

And may your radiant stars never set,

Nor may your suns consent to set.
