And a lovely woman took my whole heart,
A beauty who captured all my heart
And the fates followed the dictates of love for her.
Fate ruled by her passionate love

Beguiling with a glance, enchanting with it,
Charming with a glance, a sorceress
And among glances is a beguiler, a potent sorcerer.
With glances an enchanting sorcerer

On parting's morning, she broke faith with a lover,
One morning she violated her promise
Robbed of rest, he has no rest.
Peace of mind was lost, it has no stability
وَدَّعْتُهاI bade her farewell يومon the day of الرَّحيلdeparture وفيand in الحشاthe breast

I bade her farewell on departure's day, while in my breast
I bid her farewell the day of departure while in the thorns
Was fire, and on her cheeks were lights.
A fire and in its cheeks lights

And the caravan seeks distant lands with an innocent maiden,
The caravan seeking rest at a hill
For whom the uplands and the lowlands are traversed.
Over which tents and valleys were thrown

With tears that divulged love's secrets
With tears that shed the secrets of passion
To the reproachers—and love has secrets.
For the spurned lovers and passion has secrets
لاlet not ينْكُرنَّever deny المستهامthe love-stricken man دموعهhis tears

Let the love-stricken man not deny his tears,
The lovesick must not deny his tears
Born of what he hides, for they are a confession.
From what he reaps, they are an admission

And her dwellings at al-Raqmatayn lie deserted,
For her in the two eyelids dwellings
Moons used to shine for us there.
In them moons waved at us

O her dwelling, may pouring rain bless you,
Oh her house, your rain poured on you
And may the rains' torrents flow over you.
And its torrents flooded you

O Umaym, why, with every moment that passes me,
Shall I despair, whenever I passed by you
Does love for you beguile my thoughts?
And your love conjures up ideas for me

واللَّيلand the night ليلٌnight والنهَّارand the day نهارday
I reach evening and morning, and heartache is the same heartache;
I spend the evening and morning, that love
And night is night, and day is day.
And the night is night and day is day

I cannot shake off the wine's stupor; how could I
I can’t wake from infatuation, how can I
Sober up from it, when your mouth is the wine-seller?
Wake up from it, and your intoxicating mouth

I heave a deep sigh; my tears are stirred
I breathe the aromas, it evokes my sadness
By yearning for you, as fire is kindled.
Yearning for you as fire is kindled

منِّيfrom me فهاتيكthen those الدُّموعtears غزارcopious
If patience, after parting from her, has ebbed
If patience has worn out after her separation
From me, then those tears are copious.
From me, so here are those plentiful tears

I truly rejoice in speaking of her again,
I am ecstatic reiterating the mention of her
As much as her melodies have enraptured desires.
Not as ecstatic as her tunes were

I have no helper against love's army;
I have no supporters against the army of passion
Passion has grown mighty, and the helpers have been humbled.
Passion prevailed and supporters were humiliated
ليستْis not تقالُpardoned لديهin its presence عثرةa stumble مغرمٍof a lover
حتَّىso much so that كأَنَّas though ذنوبهاher sins استغفارseeking forgiveness
No lover's stumble is pardoned in its presence,
For a lover, no sin can be forgiven
So much so that her sins seem a plea for forgiveness.
As if her sins themselves ask forgiveness
