أَحِبَّتَناour beloved أَنتُمyou علىin السُّخطanger والرّضاand contentment
وفيand in القلبthe heart منكُمbecause of you لوعةٌburning anguish ووجيبُand throbbing
Our beloved, you are ours through displeasure and favor,
You are our beloved, in anger and in contentment;
And in the heart, because of you, are anguish and pounding.
And because of you, the heart holds anguish and throbbing.
ذكرناكمwe remembered you والدَّمعand tears ينهلّpour down والحشاand the heart
تذوبُmelts وأَجفانُand the eyelids المشوقof the yearning one تصوبstream
We remember you as tears pour down and the heart
We remembered you as tears poured down, and the heart
Melts, while the yearning lover’s eyelids rain.
Melted, while the yearning one's eyelids streamed.
فطارَso it flew بناwith us شوقlonging إليكمfor you مُبَرّحٌagonizing
لهit has زفرةٌa sigh توريkindles جوًىanguish ولهيبand flame
A tormenting longing for you swept us aloft,
Then an agonizing longing for you bore us aloft;
With a sigh that kindles burning passion and flame.
Its sigh kindles anguish and flame.
ركبْناwe rode إليكمtoward you ظهرَthe back كلّof every مخوفةٍperil
ترامىtosses about بناwith us أهوالهاits terrors وتجوبand traverses
Toward you we rode upon the back of every fearful peril,
We rode toward you on the back of every peril,
Whose terrors tossed us about as it roamed on.
Its terrors tossing us about and sweeping us along.
وينظرناand watches us منهاfrom it وللهولand terror has ناظرan eye

جَلوبٌa bringer لآجالof appointed deaths الرِّجالof men مهيبdreadful
From it a watcher confronts us—a spectacle of horror—
And from it an eye watches us—terror's eye—
Dread and awesome, ushering men toward their appointed deaths.
Dreadful, bringing on the appointed deaths of men.
وخُضْناand we waded through ظَلامَdarkness اللَّيلof night واللَّيلand the night حالكblack
بهيمٌpitch-dark وفيand on وجهthe face الخطوبof calamities قطوبa scowl
We plunged into the darkness of night, the night pitch-black,
And we waded through night's darkness, the night black,
Utterly dark, while calamities frowned in our faces.
Pitch-dark, with a scowl on the face of calamities.
وجِئناand we came فلمbut did not نظفرwe attain لديكمin your presence بطائلanything worthwhile
ولاnor نِيلwas gained حظٌّa portion منكمfrom you ونصيبand a share
We came, yet gained nothing of worth from you,
And we came, but gained nothing worthwhile in your presence,
Nor was any fortune or share of you attained.
Nor was any portion or share won from you.
وَفَيْناwe kept faith علىin صدقthe sincerity الهوىof love وغدرتمُand you broke faith
وفزتُمْand you won لديناfrom us بالجوىwith anguished love ونخيبand we are disappointed
We kept faith with love in all sincerity, while you betrayed us;
We kept faith in sincere love, while you broke faith;
You won by filling us with passion’s torment, while we lost.
And you won our anguished love, while we are left disappointed.
فمُنُّواso grant favor عليناto us بعدهاafter that بزيارةٍwith a visit
بهاthrough it العيشliving يصفوbecomes serene والحياةand life تطيبُgrows sweet
So afterward, grant us the favor of a visit
So favor us afterward with a visit,
By which life grows serene and living sweet.
Through which living grows serene and life grows sweet.
ولاand do not تمنعوناdeny us نظرةًa glimpse منof جمالكمyour beauty

Do not deny us one glimpse of your beauty,
And do not deny us a glimpse of your beauty,
That a heart may find rest, or a sorrowful soul rejoice.
So a heart may find rest, or a sorrowful one be gladdened.
وإلاّand if not فَرُسْلُthen the messengers الشَّوقof longing تبعثُare sent كلَّماwhenever

Otherwise, longing’s messengers are dispatched whenever
Otherwise, longing's messengers are sent whenever
A north wind or a south wind blows between us.
North and south winds blow between us.
علىfor مثلناthe likes of us لوif تنصفوناyou treat us fairly بحبِّكمin your love
تُشَقُّare torn open قلوبٌhearts لاnot تشقّare torn open جيوبgarment necklines
If, in your love, you dealt justly with people such as us,
For the likes of us, if you were fair to us in your love,
Hearts would be rent—not garments torn.
Hearts would be rent, not garment necklines.
وتظهرand emerge أسرارsecrets وتبدوand appear لواعجburning passions
ويشكوand complains محبٌّa lover ماwhat جناهhe committed it حبيبa beloved
Secrets would be revealed and burning passions laid bare,
And secrets would emerge, and burning passions appear,
And a lover would lament what his beloved had wrought.
And a lover would lament the wrong a beloved has done.
أَحِنُّI yearn إليكمfor you والهوىand love يستَفِزُّنيunsettles me
كماjust as حنَّyearned نائيone far away الدَّارfrom home وهوwhile he is غريبُa stranger
I yearn for you, and love stirs me violently,
I yearn for you, and love makes me restless,
As one far from home yearns when he is a stranger.
As a stranger far from home yearns.
وأطربand I am enraptured فيin ذكراكمremembering you ماwhenever ذُكِرتُمyou are mentioned

I grow rapturous at the mention of you whenever you are mentioned,
And I thrill in remembering you whenever you are mentioned;
For at the mention of you I am ever enraptured.
And I am truly enraptured by the memory of you.
