وقد كانَ يومٌ يا هُذَيم عصيبا
And on the day we stood before the dune’s crests—
The day we stopped at the ruined abodes,
and it was a grievous day, O Hudhaym—
It was a difficult day, O Hudhaifa!

تَصُبُّ عليه الماقيانِ ذنوبا
beside a ruin thirsting to be quenched by its people,
At the slopes of a dark hill, to a people's watering place -
both eye-corners pouring a bucketful upon it;
Two rivers pour misfortunes upon it.

When we looked around, we saw no stars there,
there, save those that had already set.
Except those that had just set in the west.

تطالب من تلك الرسوم حبيبا
And every heart among my companions and my she-camels
And every friend of mine and lover of beauty
asked those traces of dwellings for a beloved.
Seeks from those ruins a lost beloved.

And the caravan’s gaze was turned back after straining,
The eyes of the caravan turned back after aspiration -
weary, and the lovers’ hearts were sorrowful.
Dejected, and the hearts of lovers, anguished!

They tore hearts in grief for them,
Their hearts split with grief,
when bereaved mothers tore their garments at the breast.
When the bereft mothers split their robes.

The homes took from us their share -
of tears, and the wounded eyelid took a share.
Of tears and reddened eyelids their share.

And the caravan’s she-camels moaned in longing until you found me—
The she-camels of the caravan moaned until I found
you found a blaze for them beneath my ribs.
Within my ribs a burning agony.

فَقَدْنَ حَبيباً أم فقدن قلوبا
And I did not know, on the day of anguish in that protected land,
On that day of sorrow in the fever,
whether they had lost a beloved or had lost their hearts.
I knew not if they had lost a beloved or lost hearts!
