ومالكةٍand a mistress of رِقِّيmy bondage وماand not أناI ملكُهاher possession
أَقولُI say لهاto her سَلمىSalma مَلَكْتِyou have taken possession فارفِقيso be gentle
And a mistress of my bondage, though I am not her possession—
A queen owning me, but I do not own her
I say to her, 'Salma, you own me, so be gentle.'
I say to her "Be gentle, Salma, though you rule me"
لئنِif indeed كنتِyou were صدَّقْتِyou believed الوشاةَthe slanderers بأنَّنيthat I
سَلَوْتُI ceased to love فماthen what قالوهthey said it غيرُnot مُصدَّقِbelieved
If indeed you have believed the slanderers' claim that I
If you believed the slanderers when they said
Have ceased to love, then what they said is not to be believed.
That I complained, what they said was untrue
وبيand within me شاهدa witness منِّيfrom me علىto ماwhat أقولهI say it
وإنْand if كنتِyou are فيin شكٍّdoubt مريبtroubling فحقّقيthen make certain
And within me is my own witness to what I say.
I have a proof within me for what I say
And if you are in troubling doubt, then make certain.
And if you doubt, then investigate and inquire
يقيّدُنيbinds me حبّيْكmy love for you فالدمعso the tears مطْلَقٌunrestrained
عَليكover you وقلبيand my heart فيin الهوىlove غيرnot مطلقfree
My love for you binds me, yet my tears flow freely
Your love binds me, so my tears flow freely
Over you, while my heart in love is not free.
While my heart in passion is not set free
ولمand did not أنسَI forget إذwhen زارتْshe visited علىat حينa moment of غفلةٍinattention
تميسُshe sways كغصنlike a branch البانthe bān tree بالحليwith jewels مورقin leaf
And I have not forgotten when she visited at an unguarded moment,
I did not forget when in a moment's absence
Swaying like a bān branch, leafed with jewels.
A doe caressed like a leafy branch in bloom
وبتناand we spent the night ولاand no واشٍtale-bearer هناكthere وساعديand my forearm
يطوِّقهاencircled her إذat the time ذاكthat أيّwhat an تطوّقembrace
And we spent the night, no tale-bearer there, and my arm
We were alone without any spy or snitch
Encircled her then—what an embrace!
What necklace could adorn her neck back then?
ودارَand passed منfrom الأَشواقlongings بينيbetween me وبينهاand between her
حديثُa conversation of عتابreproach كالرَّحيقlike pure wine المعتّقaged
And out of longing there passed between me and her
Desire stirred between us, she and I
An exchange of reproach, like pure, aged wine.
Conversing gently like aged perfume
وكيفand how تراهاyou regard it ليلةa night طابَwas sweet عيشهاits living
وعهديand my last experience بطيبof the sweetness of العيشlife قبلbefore التفرّقparting
And how would you regard it—a night of sweet living?
How lovely was she one night of joy
And I last knew life's sweetness before we parted.
When joy was plentiful before we parted
إلىuntil أنْthat تجلَّىappeared صارمa keen sword الفجرdawn وانْجلىand was revealed
ومزَّقَand tore بُرْدَthe mantle of الفجرdawn كلَّevery ممزَّقrending
Until dawn's keen sword appeared and stood revealed,
Until dawn broke with its unsheathed blade
And tore dawn's mantle utterly to shreds.
And tore apart the veil of dark that blinded
وقالتand she said سُليمىSulayma نلتقيwe shall meet بعدafter هذهthis
فقلتُso I said خُذيtake روحيmy soul إلىuntil حينthe time نلتقيwe meet
And Sulayma said, 'We shall meet after this.'
Salma said we will meet after this is done
So I said, 'Take my soul until we meet.'
I said "Take my soul until we meet again"
