أسَفاًalas! علىfor تلكthose المحاسنthe lovely features
كيْفَhow بدَّلَهاchanged them الغبارُthe dust
Alas for those beauties—
Alas for those lovely features!
Alas, for those charms -
how the dust has transformed them!
How the dust has changed them!
How has dust changed them!
وبياضِand the whiteness هاتيكthose الخدودthe cheeks
فكيفand how سوَّرهاhemmed them in العذارthe side-whiskers
And for the whiteness of those cheeks—
And for the whiteness of those cheeks—
And the whiteness of those cheeks -
how the first beard has ringed them!
and how the side-whiskers have hemmed them in!
How has grime dyed them!
كانَhe was العزيزَthe honored one وقدand indeed بداhe appeared
وعليهand upon him للذلfrom humiliation انكسارdejection
He had been honored; yet there appeared
He was once honored, yet now he appears
He who was exalted now appears
upon him the brokenness of humiliation.
bowed by humiliation.
Broken by humiliation.
كانتwere محاسنُthe lovely features وجهِهِof his face
تزهوglow كماas يزهوglows النضارpure gold
The beauties of his face
The lovely features of his face
The beauty of his face once shone
shone as gold shines,
used to glow as pure gold glows.
Like the radiance of blossoms.
ويزينand adorns ذيّاكthat البياضَthe whiteness
منfrom الحياءِmodesty الاحمرارthe blush
and it adorns that whiteness—
And that whiteness was adorned
And the whiteness adorning it
the blush born of modesty.
by the blush of modesty.
Was tinged by a blush of modesty.
يهوىlongs for زيارَتهvisiting him المشوقَthe yearning one
وإنand even if يكنis شَطَّlies far away المزارthe place of visiting
The yearning lover longs to visit him,
The yearning lover longs to visit him,
He who was enchanting to visit
even if the place of visitation lies far away.
even if the place of visiting lies far away.
Though the journey was far.
فَغَشاهthen it enveloped him ليلٌa night ماnot لهfor it
منfrom بعدafter غشيتهits envelopment نهارday
Then a night engulfed him, with no
Then a night enveloped him, with no
But a night unlike any other
day after its envelopment of him.
day after it had covered him.
Has shrouded his day.
وجَفاهand shunned him منthe one who يَهواهloves him حتَّىso that
لاnot يزورُhe visits ولاand not يزارhe is visited
The one who loves him shuns him now, until
And the one who loves him shunned him, so that
Those he loved have abandoned him,
he neither visits nor is visited.
he neither visits nor is visited.
No more to visit or be visited.

If any remnant remains in him,
If any remnant is left in him,
If a trace of him remains,
ruin will surely overtake it.
then ruin will surely overtake it.
Ruin will overtake it.
