Ah, is there any protector for the love-stricken,
Alas! Is there no refuge for the lovelorn,
sorrowful, with a wildly fluttering heart?

How can one find peace in sighs
when the fire of the inferno burns within him?
When in his guts rages a blazing fire?

As the afflicted heart vents its despair.

Lie dead, slain by the intense looks of a gazelle!

For the maidens of the tents with my yearning.

The ancients took after their ancestors,
and no nighttime companion but my sorrow.
And the young went astray, following the old.

after them my night is the night of the blind.
And calm the sighs that rend my breast.

For guarding one’s soul is the wont of the proud.
