قُطْبٌan axis تدورُrevolve عليهaround him أفلاكspheres الهدىguidance
قُطْبٌ تدورُ عليه أفلاك الهدى
منhe who كانَwas يَرتَضِعُsuckling الهدىguidance فيin مَهْدِهhis cradle
من كانَ يَرتَضِعُ الهدى في مَهْدِه
An axis around which the spheres of guidance revolve,
He who suckled guidance in his cradle.
عرشٌa throne بهon it عِلْمُknowledge الشريعةsacred law ثابتٌfirm
عرشٌ به عِلْمُ الشريعة ثابتٌ
إذsince قامwas established كرسيthe seat العلومthe sciences بحدّهthrough his keenness
إذ قام كرسي العلوم بحدّه
A throne on which knowledge of sacred law stands firm,
For the seat of the sciences was established through his keenness.
وسماءُand a sky عرفانٍspiritual knowledge كأنَّas though نجومهاits stars
وسماءُ عرفانٍ كأنَّ نجومها
طَلَعَتْrose عليناupon us منfrom مطالعrising places بردهhis mantle
طَلَعَتْ علينا من مطالع برده
And a sky of spiritual knowledge, as though its stars
Had risen upon us from the horizons of his mantle.
ظَفِرَتْwon يدُthe hand الأيامthe days منهfrom him بجوهرa jewel
ظَفِرَتْ يدُ الأيام منه بجوهر
قَدindeed حَيَّرbewildered الألبابminds جوهرessence فردهhis uniqueness
قَد حَيَّر الألباب جوهر فرده
The hand of time has won from him a jewel;
His unique essence has bewildered minds.
نادتهhailed him أعلامgreat ones الأنامhumankind وصدقهمand their truthfulness
نادته أعلام الأنام وصدقهم
يبدوappears كماjust as تبدوappear طوالعrising stars سعدهhis good fortune
يبدو كما تبدو طوالع سعده
The great ones of humankind hailed him, and their truthfulness
Shines as the rising stars of his good fortune shine:
ياO سيّداًa lord منfrom حيدرٍHaydar ومحمْدٍand Muhammad
يا سيّداً من حيدرٍ ومحمْدٍ
مَنْwho مثلُlike والدهhis father الإمامthe Imam وجدّهand his grandfather
مَنْ مثلُ والده الإمام وجدّه
O lord descended from Haydar and Muhammad,
Who is like his father, the Imam, and his grandfather?
جَدَّدْتَyou renewed فيناamong us دينَfaith جدِّكyour grandfather فارتقتso rose
جَدَّدْتَ فينا دينَ جدِّك فارتقت
أضواؤهits lights لماwhen قَدَحْتَyou struck sparks بزندهwith its firestick
أضواؤه لما قَدَحْتَ بزنده
You renewed your grandfather's faith among us, so up rose
Its lights when you struck sparks with its firestick.
فَرَويتso you drank deeply منof أخبارهhis accounts ورَوَيتand you narrated منsome of
فَرَويت من أخباره ورَوَيت من
آثارهhis traditions وخلفتناand you succeeded us منfrom بعدهafter him
آثاره وخلفتنا من بعده
So you drank deeply of his accounts, and narrated some of
His traditions, and succeeded us after him.
قدindeed كنتَyou were فيon يومthe day الكساءthe cloak ضميمةًan added presence
قد كنتَ في يوم الكساء ضميمةً
مخبوءةًhidden فيin ظهرthe loins أكرمthe noblest ولدهhis offspring
مخبوءةً في ظهر أكرم ولده
Indeed, on the Day of the Cloak, you were an added presence,
Hidden in the loins of his noblest offspring.
ماnot زالceased يعبقwafts fragrantly منكfrom you نشرthe fragrance عبيرهhis perfume
ما زال يعبق منك نشر عبيره
حتَّىuntil شَمِمْناwe smelled منكfrom you ريحةthe scent ندهhis incense
حتَّى شَمِمْنا منك ريحة نده
The fragrance of his perfume kept wafting from you,
Until we caught from you the scent of his incense.
