بماwith what تُهَيِّجُshe stirs up منof وَجْديmy longing وأشجانيand my sorrows
A ring-necked dove lamented in the ban tree, unsettling me
The warbling nightingale in the branches disturbs me
with the longing and sorrows she stirs within me.
With what she stirs in my passion and sorrows
كأَنَّماas though هيshe إذwhen تشدوsings علىupon فَنَنa bough
تشدوshe sings بذكرin remembrance of أُصَيْحابيmy dear companions وجيرانيand my neighbors
As though, when she sings upon a bough,
As if when she sings of arts
she sings of my dear companions and my neighbors.
She sings recalling my friends and neighbors
ياO وُرْقُgray dove مالكِwhat ails you? لاno إلفٌbeloved companion أُصِبتِyou were afflicted بهon his account
ولاnor تناءَيْتِhave you gone far away عنfrom دارa home وأوطانand homelands
O gray dove, what ails you? You have lost no mate,
O leaves of the waving tree, you were not graced with familiarity
nor have you gone far from home and homeland.
Nor did you visit a home or homeland
فإنْthen if بكيتِyou weep كماas أبكيI weep علىfor سكنa beloved
فأَينَthen where منكfrom you همولthe copious flow المدمعof tears القانيcrimson
So if you weep, as I weep, for a beloved,
If you cry as I cry for a dwelling
then where is your torrent of crimson tears?
Where is your pouring tear like mine?
إنِّيindeed I لفيsurely in نارِa fire وجدٍof longing لاno خمودdying down لهاfor it
وأنتِand you حَشْوَamid جنانٍgardens ذاتpossessing أفنانboughs
I am indeed in a fire of longing that never dies,
I am in a fire of passion that has no end
while you are amid gardens full of boughs.
While you are lining gardens of blooms
وفيand in الحشاشةthe vital spirit ماwhat ألقاهI suffer it منof ظمأٍthirst

إلىfor غريرa guileless youth بماءwith the water of الحُسنbeauty ريَّانfully quenched
And in my life's core lies the thirst I endure
And in the afternoon, what it casts of thirst
for a guileless youth, brimming with beauty's water.
To the basin with flowing, beautiful water
إذاwhen جنىplucked الطّرفthe eye منِّيfrom me عندهin his presence نظراًa glance
أَماتَنيkilled me طرفُهُhis gaze الجانيthe offending وأحيانيand revived me
When my eye plucks a glance in his presence,
When his glance turns away from me for a moment
his murderous gaze kills me and brings me to life.
His flirting glance takes my life and brings me back
كنَّاwe were وكانand he was وأيَّاميand my days بذيat Dhu سَلَمٍSalam
بيضٌwhite وقدand indeed صارَمَتْنيthey have forsaken me منذfor أزمانages
We were there, and so was he; my days at Dhu Salam
We were, and there were my days in safe days
were bright, yet they have forsaken me for ages.
White, though time has battled me for ages
فهلْso can يُبَلُّbe quenched غليلُthe burning thirst of الوجدlonging بعدهمafter them
منof مُغْرَمٍa love-stricken man دَنفٍailing ياO سعدSa'd ظمآنparched with thirst
So can the burning thirst of longing be quenched after their departure,
Can the agony of passion be alleviated after them
in a lovesick, ailing lover, O Sa'd, parched with thirst?
By a love-struck, tender, thirsty Saad?
ياO سَعْدُSa'd لاnot الوعدُthe promise بالقاصيfar off أرِقتI lay sleepless لهfor it
ولاnor اصطباريmy patient endurance بعدafter النأيseparation بالدانيnear at hand
O Sa'd, the promise I lie awake for is not far off,
O Saad, it is not the promise of the distant one that has kept me awake
nor is my patience, after separation, near at hand.
Nor my patience after the separation, the exile
ولستُand I do not أَنْفَكُّI break free والأَحشاءand the inward parts ظامئةthirsty

And I never break free, my inward parts thirsting,
And I cannot cease while my innards are thirsty
even if my eyelids water them with a downpour of tears.
Even if my eyelids watered them with tears
أصبوI yearn إذاwhen سَجَعَتْcooed فيin البانthe ban tree ساجعةٌa cooing dove

I yearn when a dove coos in the ban tree,
I moan when the nightingale moans in the branches
and sometimes I am alarmed at the mention of parting and the ban tree.
And I am sleepless remembering the separation and distance
