تَحِنُّmoan with longing نياقُshe-camels الظاعنينthe departing travelers وماand what لهاwith them
تَحِنُّmoan with longing وفيand in القلبthe heart المشوقyearning حَنينُlonging
The she-camels of the departing travelers yearn—what ails them?
The departing travelers’ she-camels moan—why should they
They yearn, while yearning fills the lover’s heart.
moan, while the yearning heart is full of longing?
أبالنوقِin the she-camels? ماthat which بالنازحينَin those departing منof الأسىsorrow
وَوَجْدٌand passion بأحشاءِwithin the depths of الضلوعthe ribs كمينُhidden
Is it the camels? What, then, of those gone far away, with all their sorrow—
Do the she-camels feel the sorrow of those departing,
And passion lying hidden within their ribs?
and a passion hidden deep within the ribs?
ولماand when التقيناwe met للوداعfor farewell عشيةًone evening
وباحَتْand revealed بأسرارthe secrets of الغرامlove عيونeyes
And when we met one evening to say farewell,
And when we met for farewell one evening,
Eyes disclosed the secrets of our passion.
and eyes revealed the secrets of love,
بذلتُI offered لهاto her منfrom هذهthis العينeye عبرةًa tear
وإنِّيand indeed I بهاwith it لولاwere it not for الفراقparting ضنينsparing
From this eye I offered her a tear,
I offered her a tear from this eye,
Though, but for parting, I would have begrudged it.
And, but for parting, I would be loath to give it.
فلاso neither القلبthe heart لماwhen أرفعَhastened away الركبُthe caravan صابرٌpatient
ولاand neither الدَّمعtears منsince يومthe day of الفراقparting مصونheld back
The heart had no patience when the caravan moved away,
So the heart has known no patience since the caravan hastened away,
Nor have tears been held in check since parting’s day.
nor have tears been held back since the day of parting.
فلولاكso, but for you ماnot قاسيتI endured ياO غايةthe ultimate goal of المنىwishes

حوادثvicissitudes تقسوturn harsh مرّةat times وتلينand soften
Were it not for you, O utmost reach of desire, I would never have endured
But for you, O goal of my desires, I would not have endured
Ordeals that now grow harsh and now relent.
vicissitudes that turn harsh at times and then grow gentle.

If you do not know what longing is within the breast,
If you do not know what longing within the breast is,
Ask me how yearnings are.
ask me about longings—what they are like.
جُنِنتُI went mad بذكرat the remembrance of العامريّةthe ʿĀmirī woman والهوىand love
جنونٌmadness ولكنَّand yet الجنونَmadness فنونmany forms
At the mention of the ʿĀmiriyya—and of love—I went mad:
I went mad remembering al-ʿĀmiriyya, and love
Madness indeed, but madness has many forms.
is madness—but madness takes many forms.
