Why do I part each day from a companion

at whose loss death's vicissitudes have split solid rock?

And I see my loved ones, their company dispersed,

and scattered asunder by the hand of death.

And the dwellings of the most generous lie empty, and

within them the bones of the noblest have become crumbled remains.

And a death-crier summoned piety; his tidings bow

our heads and raise our voices.

And indeed, your absence and piety's have deafened my ears,

and the cord of the hopeful has been utterly severed.

O finest of the people I have known,

among the noble in character and in person.

If I could recover through sorrow what I have lost,

I would surely recover through sorrow what is gone.

And I have indeed wearied of life, and weary of me

is the long sojourn; I desire life no more,

    after al-Amin departed—and he

was, in steadfastness, the firmly rooted mountains.

And in him I lost rare gems and benefits,

and noble deeds, gains, and gifts.

And I looked upon the living with a discerning gaze,

after his passing, and found them dead.
