the east wind's drifting breeze, or lightning flashes.

    My heart's beloveds have turned away and withdrawn;

those who struck their tents at al-Rusafa leave me desolate.

I have tears I let wander among the dwellings.

I see an ignorant man attaining his wishes in ignorance,

and likewise a learned man suffering despite his learning.

That is the injustice of time and what it has wrought.

Among the days' afflictions is that wealth is denied

to a noble man, while their miser enjoys riches.

I see myself and my she-camels drawn to a beloved, while my companion—

I yearn toward one side, and they yearn toward another.

Why have we not agreed upon our paths?

My mounts yearn for the land of Iraq,

while my companions find pleasant repose in al-Sham.

Will the days grant me their return,

so I may enjoy all my noble beloveds?

Separation, with its wrenching pull, has kept me from them,

and delayed me from Jilliq and its quarters:

ties whose burdens have exhausted the Bactrian camels.

The days have returned, radiant with their reunion,

their shining face and their noble deeds.

    I remembered them, my eye drowned in its downpour;

and brought back memories of Damascus and its people

was the weeping of doves, whose cooing grieved me.

    ولم تحكِ من عينيّ منهلّ صوبها

    They grieved me, though the sorrowful heart is not like theirs;

nor did their pouring rain match that from my eyes.

From their sorrow or their persistence, they never ceased

repeating melodies, as though what they felt

of longing were what I feel, while I let my tears trail.

Dwellings of my longings, birthplace of my attachment,

where my passions intoxicated me and I recovered:

I swore a truthful oath with all my strength:

if my she-camel brings me to the sands of Yabrin,

riding her back or loading her shall be forbidden to me.

I have not forgotten—may I never forget—upon every lean mount,

my standing at al-Zamya's ruined dwelling,

    with a distressed man's regret and a loser's bargain.

How often at Jayrun I stood bewildered,

with tears whose torrents drowned me!

Have you not seen how calamities multiplied,

and aided wretched ill fortune, helping it thrive?

We sat down, while our basest arose and were made rulers.

How many tall palms at al-Rusafa were forced down

upon their lower trunks, while their saplings towered!

    فتاهَ على أشرافها وتكبَّرا

    A base man gained this world and became a tyrant;

he strutted over its nobles and grew arrogant,

though he had been the world's most abject and contemptible.

May God curse a world gained by the vilest of mankind,

whose worthless men strut over noble people!

Perhaps calamities that have harmed me will gladden me

in their outcomes, until I see them with my own eyes.

Despite my weakness from what has tormented me,

I shall bear the burdens of calamities, and I

await the outcome, with my Lord its guarantor.
