O Abu Jamil, let your eyes find joy in the one

through whom God has granted you what you desire.

And God has increased your joy in him,

with an increase, as you have never ceased to gain more,

    لا يَلِدُ الماجدُ إلاَّ مجيد

    in a noble son born of a noble father;

a noble man begets none but an illustrious son.

Oh, how splendid a father he is,

and how lovely the countenance of this newborn!

Your virtues have shone upon his face,

like the full moon in the ascendant of an auspicious sign.

Were you not the master of kindness who

left free men as nothing but slaves? [Opening word unclear.]

And among men, for whoever seeks an example, you are

the rhyme of glory and the poem's finest verse.

And whoever has sought refuge in his bounty

has found refuge in shade and a mighty pillar.

So may the newborn bring you every joy,

through one whose undying renown shall never fade.

His birth is like a festival night,

and through him every day is a feast for you.

When he came into view, I dated his birth:

The world shone with Abd al-Hamid.
