نبَّهْتُI roused للنَّأْيfor departure عُيونَthe eyes of الرِّفاقْthe companions
والليلُand the night قدalready مَدَّspread عَليناover us رواقْa canopy
I roused the companions' eyes for departure,
I drew the companions' eyes to the distance,
And night had spread a canopy over us.
As the night stretched its halls upon us.
ورُبَّand many a سكرانdrunken man بخمرon the wine of الكرىslumber
أَفَقْتُهI roused him بالعَذلwith reproach حتَّىuntil أَفاقhe awoke
And many a man drunk on the wine of slumber—
How many drunk with the wine of battles,
I roused him with reproach until he awoke.
I awakened with separation until they were alert.
قُلْتُI said لهto him منwhoever رامهاsought her صَعبةًhard to attain
حَثَّurged on المراسيلَthe swift camels إليهاtoward her وساقand drove on
I told him: whoever seeks her, though she is hard to win,
I said to him who sought the heights arduous,
Urges the swift camels toward her and drives them on.
Send the envoys racing toward it.

أَلاdo you not تحنّونyou yearn حنينthe yearning of النياقthe she-camels
Why hang back from seeking the heights?
Why hesitate to seek the heights?
Do you not yearn as the she-camels yearn?
Do you not yearn with the longing of she-camels?
لاmay ... not اكتحلتbe lined with kohl أَجفانكمyour eyelids بالكرىwith slumber
ولاnor تَصَدَّيْتُمyou applied yourselves إلىto غيرother than شاقsomething arduous
May your eyelids never wear slumber as kohl,
Neither have your lids been lined with battles,
Nor may you undertake anything but what is arduous.
Nor have you turned aside to aught but the rugged.
إنَّindeed معاصاةdefiance of الكرىslumber للعلىfor eminence
أَلذَّsweeter منthan طوعobedience to الهوىdesire للعناقfor an embrace
Indeed, defying slumber for the sake of eminence
Verily, to defy battles for the heights
Is sweeter than yielding to desire for an embrace.
Is sweeter than to yield to desire’s embrace.

مكابداتordeals الذلّof humiliation ماthat which لاnot تطاقcan be endured
So gird yourselves for glory; indeed, I see
So roll up your sleeves, for I see
Ordeals of humiliation that cannot be endured.
Bearing disgrace is beyond all bearing.
إنَّindeed جنىthe harvest of النحلthe bees لمشتارهfor its gatherer
بالذلِّin humiliation لوif فكرتyou reflected مرّbitter المذاقin taste
Indeed, the bees' honey, for one who gathers it
For the bee’s harvest for its keeper
In humiliation, tastes bitter, if you reflect.
With dishonor, if you ponder, is bitter to taste.

مراقيَthe stairways to النجمthe star وأعلىand the highest مراقascents
And yet within you is an aspiration that climbs
This, while in you is a will rising
The stairways to the star and the loftiest heights.
To the celestial spheres and up to the highest watchtower.
لئنif indeed تقَرَّبْتُمyou drew near إلىto عِزَّةٍdignity
فقدْthen may يعودُreturn البدرُthe full moon بعدafter المحاقthe moon's dark phase
If indeed you draw near to dignity,
If you draw near to glory,
Then the full moon may return after its dark phase.
The full moon may return after waning.

And a freeborn man, if he pursues a wish,
And the freeman if he seeks great hopes,
Pursues it astride noble-bred steeds.
Let him seek them atop the noble steeds.
وميَّزَand he preferred البُعدَdistance علىover غيرهanything other than it
ولاand not يريدhe seeks الوصلَreunion بعدafter الفراقparting
And he prefers distance to anything else,
And distinguished remoteness over others,
And seeks no reunion after parting.
Having no wish for union after separation.

إلاَّexcept كماas though انضيْتُI unsheathed بيضاًgleaming swords رقاقslender
So, when I roused them that day, they were just
Thus were they when I roused them,
Like slender, gleaming swords I had unsheathed.
Like eggs I gingerly gathered.

And a band of youths among them agreed with me,
And maidens agreed with me,
Who know friendship only in concord.
Who know love only as concord.
