Why do I bid farewell each day in the morning,

when there is no reunion after a long separation,

and sever ties with loved ones, not out of coldness

on my part, nor courting discord?

I parted from them with my tears pouring down,

and my ribs were aflame with parting.

I left them and turned away from them, patient,

until I seemed not to be yearning.

I sheathed them in the hollow depths of the earth,

    white and slender, like swords.

And indeed, I grew weary of living after their deaths,

and cut the bonds of my hope in them.

How can life be sweet to me when I do not see

my friends beside me, my family and my companions?

And I see death felling my loved ones

from among us like falling leaves.

I parted from the most brilliant mind in all the world,

and the greatest in merit, without exception.

And I lost the mainstay of men, when accounts were told

by the trustworthy of his noble character.

He was my pasture and the approach to my watering place,

the source of my pride and the goal of my she-camels' quest.

He had kindnesses with which he garlanded me—

favors that were necklaces about the neck.

And indeed I say to him, having escorted him

on the day of departure, with tears pouring forth:

Where does this departure lead, and whence, after him,

will the finest words and the wisdom of illumination be drawn?

You were pure among men, living and dead,

O you of the purest branches and roots!

So may the rain-clouds' downpour water you each evening,

with thunder and lightning in unbroken succession.

I exhausted my endurance in this calamity,

in grief; and I shall not remain, now that you have gone.

I must drink the cups of death

that the cupbearer's hands brought round to you.

A calamity has struck Iraq; record its date:

Iraq was bereaved by the death of Abd al-Baqi.
