The sweetest praise is the praise of a distinguished friend.

His words, like dazzling pearls, tell

Of the affection his heart has concealed.

His words come in succession, like dripping honey.

    فالودّ من أرجائها كالعاطر

    Beauty and sweetness clothe their face;

So affection from their every quarter is like perfume.

O friend, all the eminent have vied with him,

    Every gallant writer or poet.

Within my ribs I hold affection for you,

Preserved and protected for days to come.

Be however you wish, for you—you—are its trusted guardian,

Among its nomadic Arabs and the settled folk.

The only pearls are those that have come to us from you.

I am faithful to friendship, the first to give thanks.
