وحقّكand by your honor إنّindeed العتبreproach للقلبto the heart أوجعُmore painful
وحقّك إنّ العتب للقلب أوجعُ
We would ransom you; do not be hasty in your reproach, but wait.
May we be your ransom; do not hasten your blame, but wait,
And by your honor, reproach is more painful to the heart.
For by your right, reproach is most painful to the heart.
لعلّperhaps لناfor us عذراًan excuse يدافعwards off عتبناreproach against us
لعلّ لنا عذراً يدافع عتبنا
وصدركand your breast فيregarding تلكthose المعاذيرexcuses أوسعmore spacious
وصدرك في تلك المعاذير أوسع
Perhaps we have an excuse that wards off reproach against us,
Perhaps we have an excuse that wards off our rebuke,
And your breast is more open to those excuses.
And your heart is vast enough to accept such pleas.

And among excuses are some whose mention is not
Indeed, there are excuses which are not fitting to mention,
Fitting, and because of them my very soul is torn apart.
And because of them, my very soul is torn apart.

And you are no stranger among dear friends;
You are no stranger among a people who love you;
Your station among them is higher than that of the sons of time.
Your place among them is loftier than all the sons of time.

For many a sorrowful soul, distraught by your affliction,
How many a sorrowful soul is maddened by your tribulation,
Spends the night on beds of wasting sickness, groaning in pain.
Spending the night upon the bed of sickness, writhing in pain.

بدارٍ بها ما للتفرّق منزع
And my company, with you, remains a 'sound plural',
My gathering remains, through you, a Sound Plural,
In a dwelling where there is no scope for parting.
In a dwelling where separation has no power to take hold.

And I used 'were it not for,' bringing its consequent to pass,
You brought 'If not' to act as the agent for its response,
Though in grammar it is said to prevent it.
Although in grammar, it is said to signify prevention.

And if you are a stinger, be the best of serpents;
And if you must be a stinger, then be the best of serpents,
And be a bee whose antidote wards off poison.
And be a bee whose antidote drives away the venom.
