جفانيhas forsaken me منfrom أمUmm (mother of) البنينal-Banin (the sons) خيالُa vision
فقلبيso my heart جريحwounded والدموعand the tears سجالُpouring in torrents
A vision of Umm al-Banin has forsaken me;
The image of the mother of sons has abandoned me,
The phantom of Umm al-Banin has shunned me,
so my heart is wounded, and my tears pour in torrents.
So my heart is wounded and tears flow abundantly.
So my heart is wounded, and tears flow in torrents.
ولوand even if قلتI said دمعيmy tears قدalready ملكتI mastered فكاذبٌthen I am a liar
بدعوايin my claim بلrather ذاthis غرّةٌdelusion وضلالand error
And were I to say, 'I have mastered my tears,' I would be lying
If I say my tears have taken control, I would be lying -
And were I to claim I have mastered my tears, I would be a liar
in my claim; rather, this is delusion and error.
Rather this is a young woman's fancy and misguidance.
In such a plea; rather, that is sheer delusion and error.
وبيand within me ماthat which يزيلdislodges العقلreason عنfrom مستقرهits resting place
فلاso do not تعجبواmarvel إنif قيلit is said فيهin it خبالderangement
And within me is what dislodges reason from its resting place,
There is that in me which distracts the mind from its place,
Within me is a passion that tears reason from its seat,
so do not marvel if it is said to be deranged.
So do not be surprised if madness is spoken of it.
So do not marvel if it is said that madness possesses him.
وماand ... not هيshe إلاexcept الروحthe soul بلrather إنif فقدتهاI lose her
فإنthen indeed بقائيmy survival دونهاwithout her لمحالsurely impossible
And she is nothing but my soul; indeed, if I lose her,
It is nothing but the soul - rather, if I lost it,
She is nothing but the soul itself; indeed, if I were to lose her,
then surely my survival without her is impossible.
Then my continuing to live without it would be impossible.
My continued existence without her would be impossible.
أحبّI love اللياليthe nights كيso that أفوزI may win بطيفهاwith her dream-vision
وأرجوand I hope for المنىwishes بلrather قدmay أقولI say أنالI shall attain
I love the nights, that I may gain a dream-vision of her;
I love the nights so that I may attain her image,
I love the nights that I might win a visitation of her phantom,
and I hope to fulfill my wishes—indeed, I may say, 'I shall attain them.'
And I hope for intimacy - rather, I might even say I attain it.
And I hope for the desire—nay, I might say I attain it.
أكلّفI compel جفنيmy eyelid النومsleep عليّperhaps I أنthat أرىI see
مثالاًa likeness لهاof her يسريtravels by night وليسand is not مثالa likeness
I force my eyelid to sleep, hoping that I may see
I task my eyelids with sleep so that I may see
I burden my eyelids with sleep, perchance I might see
a likeness of her passing through the night—yet it is no likeness.
An image of her passing gently, not just an image.
An image of her drifting near—though truly she has no equal.
فقولواso say لهاto her إنif كنتyou are ترضينyou are pleased with عيشتيmy life
فجوديthen be generous بطيفٍwith a dream-vision إنif يعزّis hard to attain وصالunion
So tell her: if my living pleases you,
So say to her, if you are pleased with my life,
So say to her: "If you are pleased that I should live,
then grant me a dream-vision, if union is hard to attain.
Favor me with an image, even if intimacy is difficult.
Then generously grant a vision, if real union proves too dear.
فينعمthen will find bliss قلبيmy heart والجوارحand the limbs كلهاall of them
وإلاand otherwise فعيشيthen my life محنةٌan ordeal ووبالand woe
Then my heart and all my limbs will find bliss;
Then my heart and all my limbs will delight,
That my heart and all my senses may find bliss,
otherwise my life is affliction and woe.
Otherwise my life is anguish and affliction.
For otherwise, my life is but an ordeal and a ruin."
