Even if this portrait shows you my outward appearance,
If this image presents to you my outward form,
yet the portrait does not show you our supreme form.
It does not reveal to you our greater essence.
فثمّfor there is وراءbehind الرسمthe portrait شخصٌa person محجّبٌveiled
لهhe has همّةٌaspiration تعلوrises above بأخمصهاwith the sole of its foot النجماthe star
For behind the portrait is a veiled person,
For behind the drawing lies a concealed figure,
whose aspiration's very sole rises above the stars.
With ambition so high, its very soles tread above the stars.
وماand not المرءa man بالوجهin the face الصبيحhandsome افتخارُهhis pride
ولكنهbut it بالعقلin intellect والخُلُقand character الأسمىthe noblest
A man's pride lies not in a handsome face,
A man's pride lies not in a handsome face,
but in intellect and the noblest character.
But in reason and the loftiest character.
وإنand if جمعتare united للمرءfor a man هذيthis وهذهand this
فذاكthen that one الذيwho لاnot يبتغىis sought بعدهbeyond him نعمىa blessing
And if both of these are united in a man,
And if both the one and the other are combined in a man,
then he is the one beyond whom no further blessing is sought.
That is a perfection beyond which no blessing is sought.
