أياO نفسsoul إنindeed الأمرthe matter غيبٌunseen فماso not تدريyou know
أيا نفس إن الأمر غيبٌ فما تدري
بماذاwith what يكونwill be الكشفthe unveiling فيat آخرthe end of العمرlife
بماذا يكون الكشف في آخر العمر
O soul, indeed the matter is unseen, so you do not know
O soul, the affair is part of the Unseen, so you do not know,
What the unveiling will bring at the end of life.
In what form the Unveiling shall appear at the end of age.
فإمّاso either بشيرa bearer of glad tidings باللقاءof meeting وبالرضىand of acceptance
فإمّا بشير باللقاء وبالرضى
علىdespite طولthe length of عتبreproach بالزيارةover the visit للزورto the visitors
على طول عتب بالزيارة للزور
Either a herald of meeting and acceptance,
Either a bearer of glad tidings regarding the Meeting and Acceptance,
Despite long reproach over a visit to the visitors,
Despite long-standing reproach, allowing the visit to the visitor.
وإمّاor else بضدّwith the opposite بلnay ولاand may not كانbe ضدّthe opposite of ذاthat
وإمّا بضدّ بل ولا كان ضدّ ذا
تعالىexalted is إلهيmy God عنabove عذابيmy torment وعنand above ضريmy harm
تعالى إلهي عن عذابي وعن ضري
Or the opposite—nay, may the opposite of that never be!
Or else the contrary—nay, but let there be no contrary!
My God is exalted above tormenting me and harming me.
Exalted is my God above my torment and my harm.
