Beloved ones of my heart, how many lie between me and you—

Seas whose description eludes all definition.

In them, the sandgrouse lose their way, and weariness overtakes them.

Even the directions there elude anyone seeking a course.

I did not know that time would take you far away

From me, and leave me alone after you were gone.

Patience has betrayed me; no benefit has come

From the torrent of tears that streamed down my cheek.

And the dream-vision portrayed your features to me, appearing

As glad tidings; but when I rose, I had nothing but sorrow.

Will the gazelle I love favor me

With union one day, as it once did in days gone by?

Will the skittish one I love bring me joy

With closeness, after the rejection he has shown?

O skittish one, whose pasture lies within the heart,

Graze there; do not fear, for the lovesick one is far away.

As for me, though you flee from me, I am indeed

Content with a phantom vision of you that avails nothing.
