Turn aside with me—may I be your ransom—to Dummar’s broad, pebbled valleys,

    With their lush, blossoming gardens,

With waters flowing over smooth rock,

    As though they came from the waters of the river al-Kawthar;

With streams that run like speckled serpents—

Glory be to Him—what a Creator and Fashioner!

    With a fragrant breeze that

Spares you the need for civet and strongly scented musk.

And the birds in her spreading trees sing

With a mellow voice surpassing a lute’s melody.

A retreat whose splendor shines with its devotees,

    Between invocations and contemplation.

There you may meet any ascetic you wish,

Or a libertine, ever varying in his recklessness.

Where do al-Rusafa, al-Sadir, and the glen of Baw-

wan stand beside Dummar, if you judge her fairly?
