لعلمتyou would surely know أنكthat you فيin العبادةworship تلعبare playing
O worshipper of the two sanctuaries, if you saw us,
O worshipper of the two holy sites, if you could see us
O Worshipper of the Two Sanctuaries, if only you could see us,
You would surely know that you are only playing at worship.
You would know that in worship you are only playing
You would know that in your worship, you are merely playing.
منwhoever كانwas يخضبstains خدذهhis cheek (apparently intended) بدموعهwith his tears
فنحورناbut our throats بدمائناwith our blood تتخضّبare stained
If someone stains his cheek with his tears,
He whose cheeks get dyed with his tears
For while one dyes his cheek with his tears,
Our throats, instead, are stained with our blood.
Our throats get dyed with our blood
Our throats are being dyed crimson with our blood.

Or if he wears out his horses in vain,
Or he who exhausts his horses in vain
Or he who tires his horse in aimless vanity,
Our horses, instead, grow weary at daybreak.
Our horses get exhausted at dawn
Our horses are worn out on the morning of the clash.

Yours is the scent of perfume, while our perfume is
The fragrance of amber for you, while we are the amber
The scent of perfume is yours, while our fragrance
The dust raised by hooves, and the most fragrant dust.
The scent of lattices and sweetest dust
Is the dust of hooves and the most pleasant earth.
