لو أرسلوا طيف الزيارة في خفا
What harm would it do our lords, the people of fidelity,
What fault lies with our masters, men of loyalty,
What burden would it be upon our masters, the people of loyalty,
if they sent a visiting dream-vision in secret,
If they were to send a ghostly visit in secrecy,
If they were to send the phantom of a visit in secret?

ويكون مانع وصلنا ليلا غفا
watching the watchers until they grew heedless,
Lurking to evade the guards until inattentive they be,
Watching for the guardians until they grow negligent,
while the one barring our union had dozed off at night?
Making our union's obstacle a night of unwariness.
And the one who bars our union falls asleep at night.

Then, when a secret visit became possible,
If the furtive visit succeeds,
Then, if the visit becomes possible in secrecy,
the one who pledged our union would come graciously.
It comes to our tryst gently and politely,
The one who promised our union would come with gentle grace.

And before his arrival I would have spread for him
Making, before its arrival, my cheek
And before his arrival, I would have spread for him
my cheek as a carpet for sandals and bare feet.
A rug for its shoes and wrap.
My cheek as a carpet for his sandals and bare feet.

My heart would be its lodging,
And his lodging place would be my heart, which—
by their lives!—has shed all love for others.
Their lives having shunned others' love.
By their life!—has been wiped clean of love for any other.

A guest: the welcoming fare I offer him in honor is
A guest whose honor lies in staying with me
A guest for whom the feast of honor within me is
a liver that separation roasted in the embers of estrangement.
A liver seared by separation in the embers of abandonment.
A liver roasted by distance upon the embers of estrangement.

O Saʿd, if you are the herald of union with him,
O Saad! You being the herald of its arrival-
O Sa'd, if you are the herald bringing news of his union,
then you have indeed brought gladness and fidelity.
You have come at an excellent, loyal time.
Then you have truly arrived with joy and fulfillment.

Were my soul my own, I would offer it to you,
If I were to sacrifice my soul for you
If my soul were mine to give, I would offer it to you,
and deem it the gift of one falling short, who has not done justice.
And find him to have fallen short, it would not be fair.
Yet I see it as a meager offering that falls short of justice.

And you, Saad, would aid the one
And you would be, O Sa'd, the helper of one who,
who, deserted by the one he loves, has come to the brink.
Who, having been distanced from his beloved, is barely surviving.
From the desertion of his beloved, stands upon the brink of death.

Parting's day and estrangement left no
Of the days of separation and estrangement that
The day of parting and that abandonment,
succor—both were made to torment lovers—
Were created to torture lovers, none remains
Created to torture lovers, has left nothing to aid existence,

Cast off like old cloth, beyond mending.
Cast down like a worn waterskin in the desert, beyond all mending.

The sighs of my heart are embers of a fire kindled,
from it, the eyes' tears have streamed in torrents.
Ignited tears from my eyes pouring down.
From which the tears of the eye have overflowed in torrents.

In my eye sockets are motes from Hajir that have
With eyelids of one worn by wakefulness who
In eye-sockets that, due to the grit of obstacles, have
driven away the visiting dream-visions that came roaming.
Expelled the specters that came wandering.
Driven away the phantom guests that came circling.

Is there sleep, even once, for one who has been stung,
Is there any sleep for the afflicted one,
Is there sleep for one stung but once?
let alone repeatedly—or has anyone dozed?
Let alone repeated sleep or even a nap?
Let alone for one stung repeatedly—is there any slumber at all?

No sooner does lightning flash over Salʿ and the protected grounds
No sooner does the lightning of weapons shine
No sooner does the lightning of Sal' and Al-Hima flash,
than the soul overflows with grief because of it.
Than the soul overflows from it, lamenting.
Than the soul overflows with sorrow because of it.

I see it a sharp sword amidst the darkness
I perceive it as a sharp sword striking within my vitals,
doing the work of vipers, or a meteor that never goes out.
Doing snakes’ work or a shooting star extinguished.
Acting like vipers, or a meteor that never extinguishes.

Its thunder and winds mimic my heavy sighs,
and its downpour has mirrored my streaming tears.
And its affliction mimics my gushing tears.
And its downpour resembles my cascading tears.

And when Al-Aqiq and its people are mentioned,
it sets agate tears flowing in sorrow and longing.
The agate wept and yearned profusely.
It causes agate-red tears to flow in regret and yearning.

O people of Taybah, why have you not taken pity
O people of Tiba, why do you not show mercy
to a lovelorn man now begging, hands outstretched, for your bounty?
On a youth who will greet you covered in dust?
To a lovesick man who has become a beggar for your grace?

Do not combine rejection with your distance;
Combine not estrangement and your distance from me
Do not combine rejection with your distance;
rejection is punishment enough for me; it has indeed sufficed.
Estrangement is punishment enough, so enough!
Rejection alone is punishment enough for me, it surely suffices.

My love for you was never pretense.
My love for you was never an act of pretense.

A melancholic lover, physically wasted by affection?

In the captivity of enemies, tortured and bound.

Far be it from you—for my opinion of you remains beautiful—
to give the rumor-mongering enemy cause to revile me.
To insult the agitating enemy!
To let the rumor-mongering enemy gloat over my state.

How often has the censor blamed me for loving you,
and drawn out his rebukes of me, counseling and berating.
Prolonging his rebuke, advising and scolding me.
Prolonging his rebuke, offering counsel and harsh words.

From your kindred spirit, but to no avail.
Away from the face of your affection, yet he could not turn me.

So I could have time for myself and be fair.
That he might become my loyal and just friend.

The sorrowing lover's heart, as you know, indeed
As you know, the heart of the smitten
The heart of this aggrieved one, as you well know,
does not turn away from loving you out of fear.
Does not recoil from loving you out of fear.
Does not turn away from your love in fear.

and delights in meeting torment and perishing.
And relishes tribulation unto annihilation.
And finds sweet pleasure in meeting torment and ruin.

It proceeds even if darkness is its equipment,
It travels by night even if darkness be its foe,
and journeys on, even if the day were the keen-edged sword.
And journeys on even if the bare desert is its terrain.
And marches on, though the day be a drawn sword.
