You spoke truly: God's servants are His most beautiful names.

He manifested through them like the sun in the most radiant moon.

Sprouts of essences, without a maker's making,

of ancient standing, with no existence of their own to perish.

    And those are the objects known to our God's knowledge;

through it He unveils them eternally, as we have said.

Their essences are thus arranged according to

an order you see in threes and in pairs.

And the light of manifestation encompasses them from eternity,

according to their ordering and structure.

And that is absolute Being, directed

toward them, called the Face, whether creating or annihilating.

Thus creation appears in order from His knowledge,

and things are unveiled through Him, state by state.

And all is but newly arisen through Him in our sight,

eternal, nonexistent in His sight—we have never existed.

And nothing is manifest through them all but Being:

a station called 'two bow-lengths, or nearer.'

Behold, we are God's people; what lay between us has vanished:

the attribution 'people,' through annihilation; thus it is that we

have inherited from God's Messenger a realized knowledge

for the revelation of a Qur'an, with us, through us, from us.

Behold, the people of Paradise are the heedless, even if

they profess faith sincerely, as we have professed it.

And the people of Paradise are busy, away from their Lord,

as God has made the ear hear it in the Qur'an.

And they are mindful of God despite their ignorance of Him,

if they shun interpretation and the baser doctrine.

So take the kernel of this matter, and leave its husks

to people content with it, and spare us.

    ودعهم يقولوا ما يقولونه ظنا

    And pay no heed to those who follow their intellects;

and let them say what they say as conjecture.

Just as they denied our affirmation of divine oneness in ignorance,

and began denying that we possess knowledge of God.

Yet we have filled the universe with knowledge of our Lord,

so no chanter has sung except our verses.

And it is said in the Qur'an of their like: 'We shall not

accord them any weight on the Day of Resurrection.'

    And hasten to what I have told you, young man;

you will find the knowledge of God's people and the most pleasant watering-place.

    وإلا فسلم واترك اللفظ والمعنى

    Realize the meanings of what I have mentioned, and affirm it;

otherwise submit, and leave the wording and meaning alone.

Beware, beware of denial, for it

is unbelief before God in His most exalted judgment,

even if in this world we call him a Muslim,

because through the sacred law he has entered the fortress.

Hold fast to the verses of the Book, for they

are the rope—God's rope—both outward and inward.

And after this say: 'God, God—none other,

in essence and attributes and His most beautiful names.'

One day you will remember what I say, so do not waste

your time on what does not concern you, and follow us.
