You appeared to me, O Unseen, O Absolute,

through the Spirit, the spirit of the Command; You shine within me.

And the Spirit is one spirit; all of us—

our spirits, from it, precede us.

Its tongue is the intellect; when it seeks to

speak through me, it speaks within itself.

    Our speech—ours and all creation's—

my Lord creates for it within itself.

Nature appears through the Spirit, just as

it is hidden; so there is neither west nor east.

The Spirit is a sea, and its waves are

all that is still or throbs,

like your meanings, which you, within

yourself, intend when you gaze intently.

And all are God's creation; there appeared to them

    in everything a flashing sign.

O my Master, Your spirit is my spirit, as

You said, 'I breathed the spirit,' when they ascertained:

this is between me and You; and if

You are hidden in it, then I am the earlier one.

And the Unseen is You, truly the Unseen; we are not

able to draw near, nor can we reach You.

And you know Him only through what

the absolute Spirit has portrayed for us:

a knowledge from our spirit, like us,

created, beneath the One who creates.

made secure by filling God's dominion.

comprehend Him, though he passionately loves Him.

Bewildered about Him, you see him, for us,

portraying Him; thus he gazes through us.

This is a broad path, while the other—

that is a crooked, narrow path.
