    As has been reported, seventy thousand enter

    Paradise, with no reckoning taking place.

    وهو به لأمره يمتثلُ

    And one who knows his Lord is not ignorant;

    and through Him he obeys His command.

    They are questioned about Him, since they have become separated.

    They subsisted through the self, not through Him; they were not connected.

    وجاهل عنه هو المنفصل

    And the knower is the one who connects with Him;

    and the ignorant one is he who is separated from Him.

    His separation means that a veil is drawn

    over him; it is the self, a notion that comes to nothing.

    Within himself he says, 'My self,' withholding

    it from God; he gives nothing for its sake.

    And connection means he does not dismiss his Lord

    from himself; he gives Him authority over himself—so understand.

    Not that his Lord dwells within his self,

    or through union within him—He is exalted above that.

    لا ذاك معنى في الخيال يأفل

    The One he worships turns toward him through Himself;

    that is no notion in the imagination that fades away.

    And his self has subsisted through God, and acts;

    thus he is the perfect imam, who perfects others.

    له ولا القوة فيما يجعل

    He claims nothing: neither change

    nor strength in what he brings about belongs to him.

    All this is a taste, unfolded for him in detail,

    not something he has merely imagined.

    والشر لا إليه فيما ينقل

    And God is the One in whom hope for good is placed;

    and evil is not ascribed to Him in what is handed down.

    وهي وما منها إليه يُوكل

    And from the self comes everything that is done;

    and it, and what comes from it, are entrusted to Him.

    And His action encompasses every action,

    for He is the Last, and He is the First.

    through truthfulness in affirming His oneness, he is perfected in tasting.

    وربه كما يقول المرسل

    He is occupied with his Lord rather than his own self;

    and his Lord, as the Messenger says,

    is his hearing, his sight, and his feet.

    That is, through Him he is vigorous, not lazy.

    والرب بالذكر عليه ينزل

    He rises through nearness to Him and does not sink;

    and the Lord descends upon him through remembrance.

    والحق حق فيزول المشكل

    Then, in His presence, everything comes to nothing;

    and the Real is real, so perplexity vanishes.

    And as evil is excluded from God,

    it is excluded from His knower too, and is not borne by him.

    يظهر فيه علمه والعمل

    For he is given form and made a likeness;

    His knowledge and action appear in him.

    في عمره حتى يحل الأجل

    And his Lord is his guardian and does not forsake him

    throughout his life, until his appointed end arrives.

    وهو الذي يقال فيه الرجل

    Through his resolve, difficult affairs become easy,

    and he is the one they call 'the man'—

    noble-hearted, resolute, keen-witted, a hero.

    He does what spears fall short of doing.

    With a prayer that causes the mountain to crumble,

    and with a prayer, the rain of wishes pours down.

    The hard pebbles and boulders softened for him,

    and the tall, lofty-nosed ones submitted.

    وفيه قد رق الصبا والشمأل

    So hear a saying from which aloeswood fragrance wafts;

    and within it the east breeze and north wind have grown gentle.

    لدى أناس ليس فيهم جدل

    And the matter was unveiled, and the difficulty became easy

    before people among whom there is no disputation.

    وخل عنك ما تقول العذَّل

    And hold to what the most excellent imam has said,

    and leave aside what the reproachers say.

    ويكثر الخطا بهم والخطل

    For they are ailments to every heart;

    and through them error and foolish speech multiply.

    ويذهب الخير وتمضي الدول

    And in their words the paths are cut off;

    and goodness departs, and fortunes pass away,

    because they were moulded toward corruption.

    So they deserve to be left alone or ignored.
